COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. (Life & Limb) It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as “second runnings” from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer.

Draft at Monk’s with James and Dallas. Pours a slight cloudy brown with a thin, off white head. Aroma of raisins, barley, vanilla, brown sugar, sour wort, funk, and malt. Medium slightly dry body with a thin, malty palate. Really good brown.

I had the last brewing of Life and Limb both younger and mature. If that beer is any indication I’d like to say now that this one is the beer of the next decade. The 2009 incarnation matured quick and was much developed in it’s second pour. This is going to be a classic brewing in 3-5 years out!

On tap at Pap. Light brown color with a small fizzy head. Light sweet malt with a bit of earthy hop. Just okay.

4 ounce sample on tap at the Davis Graduate. Aroma is spicy with hints of chocolate, leather, and roastiness. Transparent dark copper body with a small light tan head. Spritzy, carbonated start becoming quite roasted and rather woody in the middle. Finishes with a bit of spicy hop flavoring. A bit too much carbonation. Meh.

On tap at the Graduate, Davis. Pours dark brown with a thin off-white head and a light treacle aroma. There is a dry brown ale flavor, slightly carbonated, and more substantial than expected from a secondary brew.

Tap at the Graduate in Davis, CA. Pours really dark brown with a slight beige head. Aroma of citrus hop. Barely. Medium/thin body with pretty mild carbonation. Flavor reminds of tea in a way. It’s malty and hoppy. A very tasty beer, but far from a big beer.

Tap @ Rattle n’ Hum. Poured a clear deep chestnut color with an off-white head. The mildly roasty aroma was of light coffee beans and chocolate. Grapefruit citrus hops also mix in. Citrus and grapefruit hop flavor from front to back with some mild notes of chocolate and coffee. Light body. Long very hoppy finish with a mild bitterness.

On draft at Blind Lady Ale House for a DFH night during the first annual San Diego Beer Week in November 2009. Pours brown with ruby highlights and a small off-white head. Aroma is on the weak side with caramel malts and some light hops. Flavor was unexpected -- a tea taste. Seriously, this tastes like brewed black tea with lemon. There is also a burnt bitterness which seems to derive from both the hops and the dark roasted malts, but more the latter. The bitterness continues rather harshly into the finish. This is drinkable but very unusual.

Growler at a CL release. Pours a deep copper red and a thin off white head. Aroma is spicy, woody, moderately sharp sweetness, rough harsh burnt malts and toffee, roast, green woody hops, light citrus and sweet. Flavor is sweet and hoppy trying to cover up some astringency from some burnt malts, astringent over-sparge and slight solvent, some apple and earth - eh- ok.
