Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. (Life & Limb) It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as “second runnings” from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer.

Sampled on draft at Capone’s on 11/28/09. Pours a very dark burgundy/chestnut brown color with bright mahogany edges and a one finger frothy off-white head that quickly dissipates into a lasting cap that leaves sheets of lacing behind. Sweet caramel malt aroma with some sweet apple character. syrup and subtle cinnamon spice. Very funky(in a foul kind of way) and earthy with a lot of astringent alcohol flavor. When I say earthy I mean that it tastes like freshly toiled earth, soil like with dirt pitched in. This nasty flavor is accompanied by an unpleasant spiciness and the body is very watered down. Pretty gross overall. I hope the Life and Limb is better.

On tap at The Red in Santa Cruz. Pours a dark clear brown color with the same fizzling tan head as its older brother Life and Limb. Aroma is bread crusts and dark fruits, and the flavor isn’t much different. Being a second-runnings beer, I knew Limb and Life was low in alcohol, but it tasted hotter than 4.8%. Mild maple syrup notes and a little citrus. Mouthfeel is a little thin. Decent drinkability.

Tap @ Johnny Brown’s. Pours a deep mocha brown with a small beige ring. The nose reminded me of a German Dunkle Weisse, very roasty and a tad yeasty. Mostly roasty flavor with a touch of yeast.

On tap at Papago. Pours a murky brown color with a soapy biege head. Smells of earth, baker’s cocoa, and grass. Tastes much the same with added notes of hops, assorted nuts, and bark. Interesting, but kind of limp.

Tap at Capones. Pours a lightly hazy deep amber with a medium creamy off white head. Aroma of hop tea, light birch, some maple, floral hops and toffee. Flavor of hop tea, weed, very resiny hop profile.

Malty aroma. And lighter in appearance - translucent dark brown chestnut. Tastes lighter than its counterpart on all parts.

Draught at Capone’s: Faint aroma of malts and slight birch. Poured very deep orange/very deep amber/brown in color with a small, off-white head that diminished but lasted around the edges. Clear. Not sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of light roasted malt, burnt malt, wood, and birch. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Soft to average carbonation. Roasted malt finish. Disappointing.

On tap at SDBC. Color was a dark reddish brown. Aroma was sweet with caramel, sugar, citrus, molasses, roasted malt and earth. Flavor was the same; citrus, pine, earthy, cocoa, molasses and earth. Quite piny in the finish, especially for the style. Got better throughout; could taste the DFH head influence.

Tap at the Blind Tiger for VSK. Dry bark, birch, wet green hops in the back of the aroma. Very dry and grassy, slightly citrusy. Lightish body, nicely carbonated, with a kind of nutty, chocolate, birch flavor. Fairly light. I was happy to see the birch come through in this one (unlike, say, maple syrup, which never works, ever), however it contrasted in a bit of an odd way with the hopping. Still, not a bad effort. I look forward to trying the big beer behind the this.
