COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. (Life & Limb) It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as ďsecond runningsĒ from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer.

On tap at the Winking Lizard Crosswoods location. Clear brown pour with a medium tan head. Citrus and pine hop nose with roast, apple and a bit of maple. Earthy hop flavor with a lot of tea character and a bit of roasty. Not bad, but Iím hoping Life & Limb is much better.

Location: On tap at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook, 11/24/09

Aroma: Aroma of dough, pine, citrus, caramel, orange, brown sugar, and nuts
Appearance: Pour is a somewhat murky brown color with a nice beige head
Flavor: Taste is kind of sweet with a lot of the same components as the nose
Palate: The body is light to medium, with a smooth feel and a doughy texture
Overall Impression: Overall, I liked this one more then some of the other raters it seems (though as the 15th rater, I guess there isnít enough data to know what other raters really think. I thought it was an interesting beer, a nice attempt. Iíd like to try to big brother (Life and Limb), and see these two breweries collaborate again in the future. This one could probably use a some work rounding it into shape, but overall I enjoyed what they did here.

On tap at RNH. Quite sessionable. Not too complex, but nice citrus hops and light caramel malts.

I think this is underrated here, at 46th percentile? On tap at the Blind Tiger. surprisingly dark (though that was probably the dim lighting) Smell is sweet caramel, but surprising if I donít taste the same sweetness in the beer. Nice bitter and charcoal flavor. Nutty, chocolate and vanilla. Finishes a bit too strong, IMO.

Draft @ TAPS Petaluma. Pours a deep, clear cola-brown color; huge, textured light-tan head with excellent retention and lacing that coats the glass. Basic tea and light biscuity malts in the aroma; very light, bland. Medium mouthfeel: wet barley, tea, and very light brown sugar / tannic black tea notes upfront; a light, vaguely juicy perimeter of citrus and mienral bitterness; not bad, but the tea-like core is very bland: cardboard and water; it tastes, indeed, like second runnings (or a decently hopped mild). This looks and feels pleasant, like most SN beers, but the core just isnít quite developed enough. Medium finish: wet grains, basic toastiness.

Draft: Pours a transparent copper mahogany with a small spotty-lacing light tan head. Aroma of semi-sweet toasty dark caramel malts with a light grapefruity hoppiness. Starts with pretty good fullness and a semi-sweet earthy chocolate flavor with a hint of nuttiness before a drier, smooth doughy finish. Pretty true to style and enjoyable.

Pours a very opaque with bubbles all over the glass with a thick tan-colored head. Aroma is very nutty with hop undertones and vanilla. Flavor is very chocolatey with bitter coffee notes that is balanced by vanilla bean. Flavor is fabulous and so is the body which is a creamy highly carbonated mix.

Cask at San Francisco release party/dinner. The release party casks were dry-hopped in the cask and so differ slightly from the keg version. Sam Calagione described the beer as an "imperial small beer." Itís a relatively dark brown beer, translucent, with a big head. Carbonation was pretty strong for a cask beer. The aroma has a fair dose of citric hops with an underlying nutty/earthy malt tone. The flavor is a bit acrid. Iím a fan of small beers in theory, but this one, like others Iíve had, lacks a certain depth of malt flavor. It was relatively thin and felt smaller than its abv would indicate. The hop flavors are fairly strong but lack complexity, adding not much more than a light bitter grapefruit rind flavor. Thereís also a bitter woodiness to the beer that was also present in its bigger brother but worked better there with a much thicker body.

On tap at Del Cerro Liquors in San Diego. Pours a clear medium brown with a fading beige head. Aroma is caramel and bready malt, orange peel, and floral hops. Flavor is caramel, toffee, orange peel, and citrus/floral hops, some leafy notes. Body is medium light and the finish is bitter. Decent overall but didnít live up to the hype. Will need to try Life & Limb.

On Tap @ DFH Rehoboth beer premier event-Clear black cola like pour w/a slight tan head. Slight malt aroma. Weak flavors of floral hops & malt, some caramel, some bread dough...some interest. Considering all the hoopla they put on for this brew, & the fact that it sold out in 28 minutes...it was really just very average. Not bad, just bland. It tasted like a "second runnings" beer made from left over hops; very weak brew. I enjoyed the Licorice Infused Chicory Stout Cask they had on that night a lot more. I hope the Life & Limb is better-it will certainly be stronger @ 10%; lets see if that translates over to better flavor.
