2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

Torpedo Pilsner is a hop-forward take on the crisp classic lager. We and the folks at Firestone Walker share a passion for New Zealand hop varietals, so we loaded our legendary Hop Torpedo with southern hemisphere hops for a fruity, floral twist on the pilsner style.

Just down the road from us in California’s Central Coast wine country, this rock star brewery has earned “Mid-size Brewery of the Year” at the World Beer Cup four times. Like us, Firestone is passionate about hops. Their skill with the ingredient shines in their Pale Series and elsewhere in a long beer lineup driven by a premier brewing team.

Bottle at home in CT - big thanks to Nancy for this one! Pours mostly clear matte yellow, faintly effervescent, with a frothy white head. Beautiful aroma, packed with grassy and floral hops, some pithy citrus notes, plenty of biscuity pale malts. Light-medium sweet flavor with mor biscuits, some crackers, straw, cereal, lemon rind, grass. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Crisp and clean on the finish with some crunchy cereal, bitter grass, slight pine needles, pale bread, biscuits. Lingering grassy bitterness. Excellent balance. Nice hop character while staying true to style - this isn’t a new age IPL. Wonderful beer.

Bottle @ home. Clear golden pour with a fluffy white head. Smells of bright citrus, bready malt, and a hint of dough. Slight apple and playdough. Subtle chalk and lots of floral hops. Nice sweetness of malt/bread to the flavor. Slight graininess, grass, and lots of fresh flowers. Baked apple, subtle pear, and a little bit of grain husk. One of the better beers in the set.

Bottle from a mix box from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours lemony translucent gold with a foamy white head. Aroma has lots of white grape, earth and floral. Med body or close. Some light malt, a little bready, with that white grape, earth and floral accompaniment. Actually what I thought was earth might be malt. Tasty and arguably a bit complicated beer here. All that white grape, with NZ hops, I’m betting on Nelson Sauvin. Whatever, it’s fresh and lovely beer, even from a bottle. Yummy.

355ml bottle - thanks VastActiv!
Fruity sweet perfumey hop aroma. Pale, brief head. Simple sweet malty body. Flat palate, a bit slick. Pretty dull lager. You can tell it’s made from some of the right ingredients for beer though. But definitely not an example of a crisp style of beer.

Bottle. Poured a clear golden color with an average frothy white head that was lasting and produced good lacing. Moderate to heavy hop and earthy malt aroma. Medium to full body with a dry slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy bittersweet flavor with with a moderate to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a solid beer and one of the best of style I have had.
