COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

For beer folks, Chico, CA, and New Glarus, WI, are must-see capitals on the U.S. brewing map, but getting between the two is no simple feat. There and Back is named for the planes, trains, and zeal needed to connect them. This classic English-style Bitter is a complex yet easy-drinking mix of toasty malt and a fruity, herbal hop flavor.

New Glarus is fiercely loyal to its home state, growing to one of the largest breweries in the U.S. without selling a single drop outside of the borders of Wisconsin. With those local tastes in mind, New Glarus has perfected traditional German styles and invented masterful versions of complex and intense fruit beers featuring Wisconsin-grown ingredients.

Good example of the style, but not my vote for an excellent beer. Wouldn’t have again, though

Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is fairly malty with some toasted bread, cracker and biscuit notes. Light caramel and nuttiness. Light hop aroma of stone fruit with some medium light red apple and pear ester notes. Pours a nice copper amber color with a big, fairly thick, lightly off white head that steadily recedes at an average pace. Light lacing and no legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with toasted bread and biscuits with some cracker notes. Medium light nuttiness with faint caramel notes. Medium light bitterness with some faint fruity hop notes and citrus with hints of resin. Medium light fruit esters of red apple, pear and perfume. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied and fairly dry with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright bittern with a nice malt character and decent hop notes but the esters are a bit strong and overpowers the beer after a bit.

Bottle. Biscuit, melanoidins, treacle in the aroma. Rich and malty, balances slightly towards the bitter, light floral hops. Enjoyable.

Sweet, malty aroma with vanilla notes and some yeastiness - fruity and peat tones. Squat west coast bottle with a bad label. Misty, light oakwood color. Head collapses down to an ivory film. Nice balance - good bittering, strong malt backbone, a little tannic, Finishes out with a stiff bittering - not much fruitiness from the hops, except at the very end. Interesting and very drinkable. A very mature beer. Man, this Sierra mixpack has been the bomb thus far. Market Square Liquors.

Pours a nice golden amber with a thick white head...heavy lacing. Aroma has notes of toffee and dry leaves. Flavor follows suit and adds a nice firm earthy tea - like bitterness that comes across almost as a pale ale. Mouthfeel is full and the finish is earthy/bitter and dry with a hint of toffee.

12oz bottle. Not much head on the pour but seems like it had a lot of carbonation. Color of wheat gold. Caramel hop aroma. Mild bitterness that hits the palate just right. Flavor seems to fall apart at the very end but overall a good beer.

Bottle. Clear orange pour, little spotty carbonation and an aroma of light bitters. Flavor is lightly bitter marmalade, a little biscuity and pleasantly mild on the finish.

12 oz. bottle in a 12-pack bought at Dutch’s. Pours a clear orange that falls on the darker end of the spectrum with a a thicker off-white head that settles quickly. A film and ring last all the way down. Aroma of grass, spice, herbs, mixed fruits, straw, biscuity and toasty and pale malts - crisp and bitter. Flavor of fruit rind, grass, leaves, biscuity and toasty malts, mild spice, tea, and faint sweetener. Light-bodied, with modest carbonation and a tea-like mouthfeel that finishes with some very moderate lingering bitterness. Good beer.

Poured from the bottle. Very exciting to get a new glarius beer on west coast. Aroma has earthy notes and malty. Flavour has a nice balance bitterness with the malty sweetness, leaning just this side of bitter! Palate has a nice carbonation. With a smooth finish. Overall a very nice beer.

Maybe I’m just not a fan of ESBs but I wasn’t impressed by this beer. It kind of tastes like a bitter Budweiser with a little more craft beer tinge to it.
