2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

Inspired by the perennial café favorite, Double Latte combines two of the greatest things in life: good coffee and great beer. Oregon’s Ninkasi Brewing knows their way around a good cup of joe. Featuring cold-press coffee from the legendary Stumptown Coffee Roasters and a dose of milk sugar, this coffee milk stout is a rich and roasty treat.

This young-gun brewery has a locomotive charge. A rich conversation at a local bottle shop in 2005 has morphed into a Pacific Northwest staple. Named after the Sumerian goddess of fermentation, Ninkasi’s first batch of beer was Total Domination IPA and it remains a must for those with a lupulin itch.

12 oz bottle with a packaged date of 30 May 2014. This dark brown ale looks essentially black and opaque in th glass and is topped by a durable and very creamy tan head. Aroma: fine mix of coffee and dark roasted grains in nearly equal measure. Taste: Excellent bitter-sweet balance: mildly bitter in keeping with the coffee and dark roasted grains, but clearly too bitter to be considered a sweet stout. Lingering aftertaste of black coffee and black bread. Feel: medium body is creamy smooth despite near medium carbonation. Carbonation is higher than average for style but nicely soft. O: excellent and certainly one of the best, if not the best, of the dozen 2014 special SN Beer Camp releases.

Bottle. Pours out almost pitch black with a moderate tan head. Aroma is of deep roasty/earthy coffee, lots of chocolate, light sugary sweetness and some mild lingering bitterness. Smells like a really good coffee was used. Taste is complex, mouthfeel is silky and smooth. Complex roasty/earthy coffee notes go with a touch of creamy sweetness, burnt malt, mocha, some light notes of hop bitterness and a smooth finish. This is a really good beer, perhaps the best of the beer camp this year.

Btl pours opaque black color with a khaki billowing head, looks like a memory foam pillow. Tons of lace on glass. Aromas of milk chocolate, espresso, caramel and a faint whiff of alcohol. Tastes of mocha latte, toffee, cereal and earthy hops. Full body, velvety mouthfeel, nice carbonation and a smooth slightly dry finish. Damn this beer is smooth! Extremely easy to drink stout that is perfectly balanced. It coats the tongue well, like a big wool blanket on a cold winter night.I would have to say "this might be my favorite in the beer camp line up". Home run!

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a very dark brown with a large lasting frothy light-brown head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma of lots of coffee followed by roasted malt, some light hops, chocolate and lactic notes. Flavour’s the same, lots of coffee along with chocolate, light hops, lactic notes and a big coffee finish. Medium bodied. A good balance between coffee and hop bittering. I really enjoyed it.

On tap @ Chuck’s CD. Pours creamy dark brown with thin lacy off-white head. Aroma is milk chocolate, light espresso, and some dark roasty malt on the back. Taste is huge creamy milk chocolate, sharply bitter hops, dark espresso, dark roasty chocolate malt on the finish. They did nail the milky latte flavor here, although with all the chocolate it is more of a mocha. Not too sweet which is impressive. Between the milk and the chocolate, this beer is not too complex but it nails those flavors well.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with pillowy, fine tan head. Good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma is heavily roasted malt, nutty, caramel, sweet coffee, lightly burnt, and dark chocolate. Flavor is roasted malt, lightly burnt, dark chocolate, with a heavily roasted, lightly bitter, black coffee and dark chocolate finish. Good balance of lactose sweetness and coffee bitterness. Fairly one-dimensional but quite rich and tasty. Soft carbonation, medium body, and very smooth texture.

Last beer from the Beer Camp 12 pack. Deep brown almost black with a beautiful finely textured dark tan head. Coffee, chocolate, and roasted wood notes and the aroma. Milk and dark chocolate flavors along with a nice bittter yet rounded coffee flavor. Creamy texture with a milky component but not thick like a milk shake. Excellent roasted coffee and charred wood notes come out of this and the bitterness balances the creaminess perfectly. There is a decent alcohol warmness to this but it does not intrude on the creamy chocolate flavor but rather balances it perfectly. This walks the fine line between a very drinkable Porter and a chocolaty dessert beer. It can be either one equally well and transcends both types. I’m actually enjoying this with a chocolate truffle from Schubert’s also from Chico CA which is a great combination. I?m glad I saved this one for last because it typifies the excellence of the beers in the Beer Camp series. Goodbye Beer Camp, you were awesome and I hope we?ll see you again someday.
