2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

As longtime friends, Russian River brewmaster Vinnie Cilurzo and our own Brian Grossman are no strangers to brewing experiments. While looking for inspiration for this collaboration, Vinnie and Brian decided to honor the creations of legendary Belgian brewer Yvan De Baets with their own hop-forward American-Belgian mash-up.

From complex Belgian-inspired styles to American wild ales and hoppy Double IPA’s, Russian River always pushes boundaries while respecting technique and quality. Co-owners Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo are longtime friends of Sierra Nevada and they always have a six-pack of Pale Ale in their fridge at home.

12 ounce bottle, part of the Beer Camp Across America 12-pack. Served in a tulip, the beer pours a slightly hazy straw gold color with a half inch white head that fizzled away quickly. Not much lacing at all. The brew smells like bready malt, cloves, lemon peel, and some peaches. It tastes like peppery spice, green apples, cloves, banana, citrus peel, bready malt, and apricots. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it’s a bit creamy and has moderate carbonation. I thought it was an OK brew, but I guess I was just hoping for something better. Still, it was nice to try this one.

12 oz bottle. Pours bright golden with a light haze and a white head. Yeasty bubble gum aroma with spices and herbs, red apple. Apple and pear and some saltine cracker, bubble gum and herbal flavor. Pretty solid stuff.

12 oz. bottle, consumed on 7-22-14. Dry, buttery, floral aroma features a scent of champagne. Belgian yeast unmistakable in the aroma. Pours a bright, light yellow / straw / gold. Almost greenish tint, reminiscent of Yellow Chartreuse liqueur. Highly effervescent. Small amount of beige head. I like the color, clarity, and effervescence. Dry, tangy, creamy taste features flavors of champagne, white grape juice, white pepper, and dirt. Quite hoppy-dry in flavor. Really tasty. Spicy and dull-dry aftertaste. Medium body. Lively, smooth, and soft in the palate. Overall, a nice drinker, good but not great.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is very yeast forward with a lot of spicy pepper notes, coriander and grains of paradise. Medium citrus notes with some ripe stone fruit and pear notes. Light, sweet graininess. Pours a slightly cloudy yellow gold with a thin white head that quickly recedes to the edges where it mostly disappears. Faint lacing and small legs. Flavor has a light, sweetness with a bit of grain character. Quite a bit of fruit esters with pear, stone fruit and light banana character. Some medium notes of coriander and light pepper character. Medium light hop character of citrus and hints of resin and medium bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied and slightly crisp with a medium low carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent beer with a lot of yeast character. The citrus hop notes work well with the yeast too. Bitterness helps dry out the beer.

12 oz. bottle from the 12 pack. Pours a bright, but light golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma and flavor have pale malts, banana, cloves, Belgian yeast, light citrus, some herbal character to the finish, light spicy notes with mild bitterness to the finish.

From the 12-pack.

This one was the one I was probably most excited about. Light yellow pour, nice fluffy white head. Super-dusty aroma, some sweetness, cracker, a bit of citrus. Flavor is rather sweet, highlighting the fruity esters and only subsequently bringing a late spicy dryness to the mix. It’s OK but not really up to Russian River standards, I fear.

This is my kind of Belgian beer. Pours a clear, light yellow with head fading to a ring leaving not much lacing. Aroma is tangy, Belgian, cider. Taste is full-on Belgian with yeast, bread, banana, clove, white pepper, dry leaves. It’s pretty good. Complemented by just a little cleansing hops as it dries out to keep it from cloying. Not bad at all.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Citrus, tropical fruit, mango and lemon with moderate horse blanket and tartness. Slightly hazy pale yellow with minimal white head. Taste is fruity esters and slightly spicy. Crisp dry finish.

This is a style I enjoy more than most I think--the Belgian w/ American hops--and one that is done better than most. It pours a nearly clear blond color w/ only a small head of fine bubbles. This is more yeast forward than many w/ the banana and black pepper taking center stage w/ just a bit of tropical fruit around the edges. This is a dry and crisp beer, relatively light bodied w/ fine, vigorous carbonation but in no way watery. Citrus notes from the hops seem to come out as it warms but also more of that spicy Belgian yeast, making for a beer that gets better w/ each sip. A bit of sweetness pops out in the finish and the spicy yeasty, hoppy flavor lingers on the tongue. For fans of Belgian beers brewed w/ American hops, this is good enough it makes the entire beer camp twelve pack worth trying.
