2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

3 Floyds has a reputation as the Midwestern kings of alpha (hops), and it seems that one of our beers helped to lure them down the lupulin-paved path. Chico King is a mash-up of our mutual passion for hoppy pale ales and combines a uniquely robust malt body with intense citrusy and fruity new school hop varietals.

3 Floyds marches to the beat of their own (double kick) drum when it comes to collaboration, often partnering with comic book artists, tattoo parlors or heavy metal bands when inspiration strikes. These eclectic beers are coveted throughout the Midwest and some beers, like the legendary Dark Lord Imperial Stout, have spawned something akin to a beer-themed holiday in the brewery’s hometown of Munster, IN.

Bottle. Pours reddish amber white head. Nose/taste of caramel malt, candy resin, pine, old citrus and toasty nuts. Lighter medium body.

Sampled at Beer Camp 2014 @ Navy Pier (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich amber hue, gentle haziness with nice orange glow throughout. A frothy offwhite head sits atop small, laces ok. Aromas preach a rich bitter earthy nose, a bit deadened and oxidized with faint citrus. Bready malts, a bit yeasty with carmelized and biscuit malt elements. Initial is a bit bitter, earthy and herbal. Spicy hops and a sweeter malt base beneath gives a firm bitterness and odd feel overall. Middle is a bit sweet, firmer sweet caramel body beneath definitely gets its shots in. Backend and finish is dry, earthy and bitter but not really a hop profile I dig. One of the entries in the pack I was more disappointed in but a solid enough beer.

12oz bottle from 12 pack bottled 5/15/2014. Pours a clear dark golden color with a finger of foamy white head. Aroma of musty malts, old oranges, and hints of pine. Was not impressed with the aroma. Taste old grapefruit, pine, citrus zest, and lots of toasted and caramel malts. Was hoping for more hops and then malts. Sadly not impressed.

Mild hop aroma, with caramel malt notes. Pours a clear amber with a full white head. Muddled hop flavors, with citrus and tropical fruit notes, and a bit of sweetness from the malt. Short bitter finish, moderate body. Not a bad beer, but I was expecting a lot more from these two brewers.

Bottle from the mix pack. Pours a very clear amber color with a moderate light tan head on there. Nose is almost like a little bit of sourdough bread in there, and I’m not sure what to think of it; slight citrus afterwards. Very light taste, with just a slight bit of fresh bitterness and not much else. OK.

Bright, rich amber with a weaker lacy white head. Aroma is straight dope. Flavor is light english bittersweet toffee and malt and hawaiian thai. I guess they’re done making the best stuff.

On tap at JL Beers, Grand Forks. Nice hoppy bitterness, moreso than other APAs I would say. Fresh and herbal tasting. Quality stuff.

7/30/214 Light amber color with a white head. Citrus, malt and caramel aromas. A bit mild and doesn’t stand out at all. My least favorite of the box.

Poured from bottle into a tulip: Pours dark amber with a thin white head. Aroma of biscuit, caramel, light citrus, and a little grass. Taste is pretty malty, a little citrus, caramel, with a slight hop flavor at the end. This is pretty thin and kind of disappointing. Light to medium body, strong carbonation. Worst beer of the 12-pack so far.
