COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First of series. Fritz Maytag, owner of San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Company, is regarded as the founding father of the craft brewing movement. Frtiz agreed to guest brew this very special ale with us in honor of our 30th anniversary. As a nod to the dark ales and stouts that seduced both Fritz and Ken in the early years, we bring you this pioneering stout, a rich and roasted ale, perfect for aging, and worthy of your finest snifter. Enjoy!

Shared with a few buddies on a stout tasting night, thanks Joel. Pours very dark brown. Sweet roasted malts and caramel aromas. Great, balanced stout. Nice malty flavor, great coffee, not too overpowering. Slightly sweet finish, which I really enjoyed.

Bottle courtesy of BrainLair. Pours a very dark and thick. Pretty mellow and drinkable. Lots of roast and coffee. Dry with a bitter, somewhat hoppy finish. Tons of hops. Lots of toasted grain.

This stout poured the usual black as night color. But as you can see in the picture that the head on this brew is a monster. Huge, tan, crater filled head that stuck around and might still be sticking around if I had not dived into this baby. The smell on this brew is very nice. Sweet and burnt notes hit the nose. Roasted malt, chocolate, espresso, and earthy hops. Small amounts of alcohol peak through once in a while. A really nice aroma. The taste is pretty much just as good. A nice amount of bitterness comes from the chocolate. Very roasty and dry. Hops linger in the background. Alcohol comes through a little more in the taste. Mouthfeel is nice. It’s medium bodied. Smooth, creamy, and crisp. Dry ending and after taste. Good stuff. The taste on this stout won’t blow you away like other Imperial Stouts like The Abyss or Older Viscocity. It’s not supposed to. It’s just a very well crafted beer that I would pick up anytime. But what do you expect from two pioneers of craft brewing.

A few years old from my cellar, can’t believe it is retired! Did use my finest snifter indeed - from the Southampton IRS release. Pours thick dark shiny black in color with a huge caramel creamy head almost an inch tall. The aroma bring creamy toffee and light chocolate malts with light cooling alcohol fumes just right in the nose. The flavors of roasted chocolate and malts with no bitterness come in so smooth with notes of creamy vanilla all on a creamy medium to thick body. The body rounds out the beers flavor perfectly making it delicious.

[Rated 05/21/2010] Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma is of chocolate with some fruitiness to it. Flavor is bold, of coffee, chocolate and grapefruit. Leaves a long-lasting finish of roasted malt.

Bottle from Redmonds, Dublin. Black pour with a nice tan head. Dark fruit, roasted malt, dark choc and fragrant hop, all present and correct in the nose.. Full bodied, rich and gently warming, the flavour displayed similar qualities. Striking balance and slipped down a treat. A first class Imperial Stout. Good show !

11/2011 SBF: Pours black with a tan head. Bitter but nice; like a dark chocolate.
