4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20Originally reviewed: 6/2/10. Had this on tap at City Beverage in Winston. Poured into a Chimay goblet. The pour was a deep dark black, with a thick coffee-colored head on top. Great retention. Left lots of sticky lace. Big scents of roasted malts, baker’s chocolate, vinous grapes, and toasted sugar. This was much sweeter in the nose than expected.
The body is velvety smooth. Some thin spots noted, but overall, this is creamy and soft. Flavors carry some wine-like characteristics, but not to the full. Plenty of milk chocolate and roasted malts to round this one out. As the beer warms, there’s a nice resiny hop finish that I really like. No surprise coming from SN. Great beer. I’ve got a bottle that I bought when this first came out that I’m going to hold on to for awhile. I bet these flavors will develop superbly.

Aroma is chocolate, spice, malt, cola.
Taste is dark fruit, chocolate, coffee with a boozy bittering....peppered.
Nice.

Bottle. Chocolate/molasses malt and orange aroma with a hint of cinnamon. Black with moderate tan head. Sweet chocolate syrup and coffee malt flavor. Smooth.

Bottle. Dark chocolate, prune, mocha, and alcohol aroma. Black brown with a large tan head. Dark roast coffee, cocoa, as, dark fruit flavor with a roasty bitter finish. Full body, soft carbonation.

Bottle @ home... It pours fantastic pitch black with a medium creamy tan head....very good looking lacings... The aroma is roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and dark fruit..... The flavor is creamy roasted malt, coffee, bitter hops and coffee.... very nice mouthfeel! fantastic brew!

After buying the remaining one at my local beer store, I find myself craving more of this. If only I was drinking Sierra Nevada a few years ago, I could be enjoying this one still.

Black with a decent beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, smoke, dark fruit. Slight creamy mouthfeel, roasty on the palate. Taste is smoke, roasted malt, raisins, dates.

Bottle @ Christers. Pours black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, light spices, maybe hints of pepper, dark fruits. Flavor is malts, coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruits, licorice, spices and pepper comes thu abit more than in the aroma. Full body, soft carbonation. Very nice. 040213

Bottle @ Aarhus tasting. Black with a lasting brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. Oily and smooth. 040213

Bottle. Nice head with excellent duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are roast malt, coffee, chocolate, licorice, vegetables and hops. Dry and smooth.
