Jack McAuliffe was the first American "micro" brewer. His tiny New Albion Brewery in Sonoma, California inspired countless dreamers to start small-scale breweries of their own. Jack agreed to guest brew this very special ale with us in honor of our 30th anniversary. This Black Barleywine Ale is a nod to the legendary ales New Albion served at their legendary summer solstice parties. Rich with bittersweet and roasted malt flavors, balanced with whole-cone American hops, this robust ale should age gracefully for years.

Tasted on 12/20/12 from a corked and caged bottle purchased at Discount Liquors in Milwaukee quite a while ago. Pours very dark mahogany with a thick tan head that slowly recedes to average lace, leaving very thick lace along the inside of the glass. The nose is full of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and molasses, classic barley wine with a bit more dark roast than normal, and just a light touch of cola. The flavor has some sweetness with all of the caramel, molasses, toffee, and brown sugar noted on the nose, with a bit of nicely roasted bitterness on the back end and just a touch of vanilla. The body is full with average carbonation and a long caramel, brown sugar, molasses, and nicely bitter roasted finish.

2 ounces at tasting. Aroma: molasses, candied fruits, licorice, caramel, oxidated . App: dark red, small off white head leaving good lacing. Taste and palate: medium body, big licorice and raisin, sweet finish. Overall: this one didn’t age really well. I gave it a few more points considering it wasn’t drank when released. It sure didn’t age really well. Really oxidated.

En bouche, Malt caramelisé légèrement épicé, prune, sucre d’orge, vanille, baies, bois. Texture assez onctueuse et corps moyen à rond.

Bottle (750 ml), shared. 5+ years old. Very dark amber with a small beige head leaving little lacing. Aroma is oxidized/madeira with weird minty notes, roasted malts, raisins and mild spiciness. Taste is sweet with madeira/oxidized notes, raisins, roasted notes, alcohol and mild spiciness. Full body. Medium carbonation. Raisins finish. Oxidized but otherwise good black Barley Wine.

Bottle shared. Deep red brown pour with thin tan head. Aroma is very roasted, tons of Madeira, so oxidized, minty. Taste is very rough, roasted, oxidized, lots of booze. Palate is full bodied, hot alcohol, light carbonation.

Thanks to TimE for sharing the bottle at the tasting! Poured into a taster showing light coffee with a finger of latte colored foam. The nose shows a lot of caramelized black sugar. The palate shows a lot of the same with a moderate carbonation and a strong caramelized black sugar forwardness. Very slight bitterness at the end from the hops.

Pours dark brown, bit of beige foam. Aroma is nicely full of roast, vinous even, bit boozy, hints of vanilla. Taste is more intense, some bitterness bringing out vineus dark fruits. Actually very nice, full of berries, smooth, flavours are coming nicely together. Boozy but in a good way. Hoppy as well actually. I like this one a lot, excellent sipper and I could sip quite a lot of this.
