Jack McAuliffe was the first American "micro" brewer. His tiny New Albion Brewery in Sonoma, California inspired countless dreamers to start small-scale breweries of their own. Jack agreed to guest brew this very special ale with us in honor of our 30th anniversary. This Black Barleywine Ale is a nod to the legendary ales New Albion served at their legendary summer solstice parties. Rich with bittersweet and roasted malt flavors, balanced with whole-cone American hops, this robust ale should age gracefully for years.

Source:On tap at the Beer Trappe in Lexington.
Glass:10 oz snifter.
Appearance:Hazy brown pour with a thin beige head.
Aroma:Aroma is mainly of caramel and resinous hops. Hints of spice and citrus abound.
Flavor:Flavor was a sweet malt base with a solid hoppy finish and lingering presence.
Palate:Medium/full body with soft carbonation.
Overall:This didn’t have as much roast in the flavor as some Black IPAs do. The overall hop presence was great, but this wasn’t much more than a black colored Bigfoot (Sinamar?). Overall a very good beer, but when I heard Black Barleywine, I was expecting different and better. At the heart, this was a victim of the advertising.

Pours a very dark brown with a light beige head that leaves pretty nice lacing. Nose is really hop forward with some tobacco in the back. Taste is not that sweet for a barleywine with some rich toffee notes, more green hops and some oxidation. It plays well with the rest, though. A little hot still, a tad more than you would expect from a 10% beer. Medium-full body, low to medium carbonation. A pretty good sipper!

2 ounces at tasting. Aroma: molasses, candied fruits, licorice, caramel, oxidated . App: dark red, small off white head leaving good lacing. Taste and palate: medium body, big licorice and raisin, sweet finish. Overall: this one didn’t age really well. I gave it a few more points considering it wasn’t drank when released. It sure didn’t age really well. Really oxidated.

Bottle (750 ml), shared. 5+ years old. Very dark amber with a small beige head leaving little lacing. Aroma is oxidized/madeira with weird minty notes, roasted malts, raisins and mild spiciness. Taste is sweet with madeira/oxidized notes, raisins, roasted notes, alcohol and mild spiciness. Full body. Medium carbonation. Raisins finish. Oxidized but otherwise good black Barley Wine.

Bottle shared. Deep red brown pour with thin tan head. Aroma is very roasted, tons of Madeira, so oxidized, minty. Taste is very rough, roasted, oxidized, lots of booze. Palate is full bodied, hot alcohol, light carbonation.
