Brix (371), Denmark Feb 16, 2008 Tasted 2008-02-16. Fresh bottle. Pours semi clear, orange with off-white head. Aroma of malt, hops, pineapples and pine cones. Ditto flavours. Moderate bitterness. Tasted side by side with Mikkellers All Others Pale. This one paled! mybestfriend (261), Gothenburg, Sweden Feb 16, 2008 Updated: Mar 10, 2008Bottle. An amber pur with white head. Very refreshing and hop driven on the nose - tropical fruit sweets, apricots, melon and some notes of white toasted bread. The flavour profile has a foundation of malt - toasted white bread - but this beer is mostly about the hops. Again some notes of tropical fruit, melon, pine and grapefruitpeel. The finish is hoppy and a bit salty. Joeh (1908), Buckinghamshire, England Feb 15, 2008 Bottle. Orange, slightly coloudy with a thin white head. Strong cascade aroma, also quite peppery. Thick, malty base, quite sweet with a bitter finish, strongly hoppy aftertaste. I think this is quite like the Celebration ale, perhaps a bit less bitterness. A rare US IPA that doesn’t go overboard. maeib (4677), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England Feb 15, 2008 Bottled. A ginger coloured beer with a fast dissipating whitish head. The aroma is lovely fresh piney hops. Very fresh tasting again. Nice hops and good balancing malt. Doesn’t seem American despite the hopping. No chewiness just a pretty smooth flavour. That might be because the ABV is low for a US IPA but it just tastes a bit British. Veer (355), Landskrona, Sweden Feb 14, 2008 Aroma: lovely, sweetish, mango, hops, vanilla, caramel malt, exotic fruits, lemon grass
Flavour: nice, adult, malty and slightly sweet with a proper bitterness of hops. Very refreshing yet quite full-bodied and non-watery. Bitter, almost sourish aftertaste.
Appearance: hot orange, clear. Pale, yellowish head. The fine foam stick onto the glass in broken formations.
Palate: Fluffy, robust, perfect carbonation (i.e. fluffy, some fizzyness but overall soft). Has a bite in the mouthfeel... Very nice.
pilsnerrogge (1769), Finspång, Sweden Feb 10, 2008 Bottle Somewhat unclear amber/orange colour. Nice head. Hoppy orange, lychee and salty liquorice aroma. Flavour is packed with piney hops. A great IPA! Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Feb 7, 2008 Bottle, Oddbins in Summertown. Tangerine orange pour with a modest but sticky pith-colored head. Very hop-forward aroma, and as expected, there is certainly a bright grapefruit component here. But layered on top of that is an interesting catty melon character, and a bit of high-frequency mint. Maybe even a bit of watercress. A sweet, lucious aroma. Citrus and melon hops flavor--more flavor than bitterness--with a lovely bit of tropical funk that surprises me in a SN beer. (A good surprise.) Very light caramel sweetness blending unobtrusively with the hops. Not the biggest or meanest IPA, but really nice. Brigadier (1212), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Feb 2, 2008 12 oz bottle
I found this around Christmastime and just got around to opening it about two weeks ago. It wasn’t bad though I’m not likely to pick up any of the 2008 vintage later this year. If you are a fan of solidly done IPAs give it a shot. If you only prefer the best then save your money; this one is not going to rock your world.
Aroma / Appearance - A one finger stark white head contrasted against the clear transparent body underneath. The bronzed liquid swirled easily around my pint glass. The grassy nose was not as aggressive as some IPAs but still effective at conveying the intent of the beer within. Orange peels were about the only distinctive aroma.
Flavor / Palate - Steeped tea fills the mouth with a slight bitterness. Orange sherbet blended with pepper and rye transition in before the typically semidry finish. This does not stand out from other IPAs but at the same time harbors no major flaws. For the price it was what I expected ($1.50).
