3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared at The Bruery - thanks! Pours clear, amber-gold with a creamy, white cap. The nose holds tangy berries, wood, leaves, honey and toffee. Medium sweet flavor, lightly oxidised, with dry wood and toffee, dry orange. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Light warmth on the finish with more dry woodiness, toasty toffee, leafy bitterness. Fair.

tap at the Chico brewpub Aug 2013, 55 IBUs - This brew has an inviting aroma led by bourbon and vanilla. The flavor starts with good, bourbony, vanilla sweetness and leads into ample hops bitterness that combines with the vanilla to linger pleasantly in the finish. It’s full bodied and extremely enjoyable, easily my favorite of the beers I had on tap at the brewery.

Bottle - Pours a dark amber, with substantial head and good lacing. Great interplay between the rye malt and the hops, which don’t get lost in the beer. Will be fun to open another bottle in 6 months and see how it develops...

Hazy dark red-brown, tons of white lace. Over-carbonated. Aroma is off putting; earthy/woody in a bad way. Taste is blah with bourbon-rye malts dominating. Pass.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Amber color out of the bottle with a thin off white head. Big fresh hop nose with grapefruit and barrel notes. This is a nice balance for a hoppy barrel aged beer. Flavors of oak, wood, citrus, grapefruit and bourbon. Rich grainy flavor with lots of hop, enhanced by the barrel aging. This may be my favorite barrel aged IPA.

Close your eyes and image you’re back in the old west, a friend says, "hey come on over and we’ll open up a keg o’ nails ... " well this beer, being aged in rye whiskey barrels is so smooth and mellow ... this is the ultimate old western beer. It is remarkable and unmatched.
