COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

Big beast of a beer. Murky khaki color. Both big resinous pines and sweet toffee in the aroma. Taste was sweet, boozy, and piney. Lots more toffee. Thick mouthfeel, low carbonation. Nice.

Sample @ RBWG, Asheville. Thanks to whoever supplied this! Deep amber pour. Very woody and hot on the nose. Some caramel-dipped tree bark. Chocolate and roasted grain flavor. Some leather and tangy red fruits. Quite oily, supple. Decent.

Sample at a cool-ass bottle share. Pours a hazy auburn color with a quickly forming khaki head that settles to a ring and leaves some touches of lace. Nose involves lots of hops, pine and mint coming forward, along with plenty of oak. Pretty sweet, and also quite bitter. Bigger body, oily, syrupy, with a drying oaky finish. Pretty cool brew, though not necessarily a huge improvement over the original. This was a fresh bottle from this year, so age I imagine would do wonders. Still, cool to try what was a really hoppy barrel aged beer.

Deep caramel red with a foamy lasting head. Dried fruit and leather smells. Butter scotch taste that moves to a leather finish. Nice full mouth feel.

Bought about a year ago in Chicago from West Lake Liquors. While opening, the cork had a nice pop propelling about 6 feet. The aroma was rich caramel vanilla brown sugar and whiskey. The taste followed suit along with a relatively strong alcohol presence. This is a sipper. Palate was good with just the right amount of carbonation. Overall a damn good Barleywine.

2013 Bottle via BuckeyeBoy – thanks! Sat in the cellar for just about a year now; couldn’t wait any longer. It’s got an unmistakable Bigfoot smell; rich in hops and sweet like caramel and toffee. The whiskey barrel adds to the sweetness nicely. Pours a deep amber with perfect clarity and topped with a thick finger of creamy beige head. After several more minutes of sniffing (yep, full scale geekdom was exercised here) I finally get to tasting. Heavy hop and caramel malts, toffee, and light wood. I really like the mild influences of the whiskey barrel here, it allows Bigfoot to remain the centerpiece while adding to the overall product. Hard to say, since with only one bottle I didn’t sample fresh, but it feels mellower at this point and more complex that a typical one-year old Bigfoot. Really enjoyable; one of the best barleywines I’ve had to date.

Bottle 750ml. [2013] Pours deep amber/reddish with very low beige head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is of alcohol, caramel. Taste is of malt, caramel, alcohol, sugar, bitterness, booze, fusel alcohols. Palate: Full bodied. Overall: Good, boozy. Nice one, but maybe too extreme to be outstanding. Huh.

Thanks to nate321 for this one! Pours a lightly veiled caramel looking with not much head or lacing. Nose is of buttery caramel and bourbon, sugary to the extreme. Slight hops and wood. Taste is of caramel and sweet but not cloying because it is balanced by a healthy (medium-high) dose of bitterness. Alcohol shows quite a bit and mouthfeel is sticky, a real barleywine. Really nice but not necessarily an improvement to the already excellent SN Bigfoot.

Bottle, as part of a 5-year Bigfoot vertical for our Chubby Liver barley wine party. Pours murky brown amber, looking pretty similar to the other bigfeet of the night. Some head, but not much. Aroma = bigfoot + an extra dose of vanilla, bourbon, and fruit. So much smoother than the non-barreled Bigfoot. I really dug this one.
