3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at pony bar HK with Linh. Can’t believe I’ve never logged a review for this. This is one of those barleywines that flaunts the subtly of hops while maintaining the composure of a nearly 13% beer. Balance is the key here, with nothing underrated or over dominating.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
From 750-ml bottle; drank in early January 2013. Pours a clear caramel color with a filmy head. Syrupy-sweet aroma of caramel, lot of booze, and toffee. The taste is similar, with syrup, caramel, treacle, and oak all harshly creating a quite hoppy, acidic, woody flavor. Very gritty mouthfeel; extremely dry finish. This brew desperately needs some cellar time, as it’s way too sharp and the different flavors are all in the forefront competing instead of complementing.

Bottle, thanks Bruce. Pours a beautiful dark amber with off white head. Aroma is quite resinous, varnish, caramel, pine, vanilla. Taste of wood, vanilla, resinous, caramel, toffee, biscuit. Oily and sweet with a bitter finish. Nice but a lot of the hops from the standard version are lost.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep brown body, large light tan head, sudsy lacing. Rich dark malts, bourbon, booze, roast, earth, and caramel. Full bodied, assertive carbonation, a bit hot in the finish. Should improve nicely with about a year on it to take off some of the heat and mellow the carbonation a little.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle given to me by some guy in a place I used to live sort a recently long ago. Pours mahogany with a small head that reduces to a oil slick lacing head. Nose of pitted fruits, oak, and a bit o’bourbon. Taste is generally balanced with pitted fruit. Bourbon comes mid way and the finish is lingering. This makes me Japanese happy sunshine face.
