Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This yearóin honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brewó weíre releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the maltówith rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it wonít be around for long.

750 ml cork and cage bottle from GM Liquors. Nose is light bourbon and vanilla combined with hints of golden raisins and bubblegum. Clear rust red with a small beige head. Flavor is lightly bitter, bourbon, and lots of vanilla. Nice and smooth.

750 ml bottle, 2015 vintage.
Dark copper, thick lasting head, and nice lace.
Aroma is brown sugar, toffee, whiskey, hops are there, but muted.
Flavor is burnt sugar, whiskey, vanilla, spicy hops, and oak.
Barrel aging definitely toned down the hops, and added a subtle sweetness from the whiskey.
Whiskey and oak tannin build as it warms. Definitely a sipper, as it changes in the glass. This would pair well with A Fuente Hemingway, Brickhouse, or Montecristo white label cigars. Maybe even Rocky Patel Edge corojo.

Aromas of massive barrel wood, coconut, dark fruits, pines, raisins, molasses, burnt caramel, toffee, liquid malt extract, barley and heavy whiskey. Appears an extremely dark amber brown with almost no foam and faint lacing. Taste is immense barrel wood, bark, amber malts, whiskey, rye and biscuit upfront. Mid-palate brings slick caramel, molasses, spices, herbs, chile peppers, more rye, more wood and bark. Finishes smooth with little booze bite, more caramel, spices and whiskey. Overall, really nice take on the original. Definitely a massive barrel wood and spice addition. The original is definitely there as it is still incredibly hoppy but there is plenty of spice, wood, bark, whiskey, oak and pine available to the palate. A rating.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2015 Bottled, 2015 vintage. Pours very dark copper color, almost tan head. Aroma is lots of whiskey and hops. Whiskey is prominent, little bit of vanilla, (maybe a bit of coconut, but thatís not something I would have gotten w/o knowing itís supposed to be in there), big malt character and of course (this being bigfoot) lots of hops. Some citrus hops are notable. Actually, using whiskey is but not as in your face as other barrel-aged beers. You still get plenty of hops instead of all whiskey. Nice. Flavor is similar, lots of hops up front, and whiskey undertones throughout, and itís 100% there, you wouldnít mistake it, but itís not as aggressive as some other barrel-aged beers. So I like that. Bitter finish is notable. This is excellent. The more I sip this beer, the better it becomes. Itís just so good.

Finally got around to drinking one of these 750ml bottles and figured this was a good time to rate it. Dirty mahogany with a beige head that completely fades. Balanced oak, booze, resin with some lemon rind hops (although musty), caramelized onions with some burnt butter, toffee and caramel. Mild carbonation, full body, smooth, boozy, sweet yet becomes bitter, balanced and enjoyable. Great sipper.

Beautiful ruby red in color. Crystal clear. Notes of vanilla, caramel, some spicy booze. Sticky mouthfeel, syrupy. Wonderful. Just the right amount of barrel aging. I canít get over the amazing color.

Bottle via and shared with oakbluff. Pale amber in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of fruitcake, bourbon, and ginger. Warming in the mouth with elements of cake batter, fig, whisky, and earth. Medium bodied with a fairly boozy finish. A solid barleywine, but I much prefer the non-barrel aged version.

Bottle from Belmont way back when. A: Opaque brown color with a thin head and bubbles collecting on the sides of the glass. N: Bourbon, toffee, biscuit, caramel, vanilla, butter, toast, melon, hops, pine, and earth. T: Very bitter; not much sweetness. M: Heavy body, big alcohol, creamy carbonation. O: A big barrel aged whiskey bomb with a noticeable Bigfoot presence underneath. That said, this one is still hot and untamed, and I donít think itís ever going to be much different than what it is now.
