COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

Pours a muddy amber color. Very bourbony, sweet, oaky, vanilla aroma. Much of the same in the flavor. Very tasty.

Garnet with small white head. Vanilla notes from the barrel, slight hop in the aroma. Nothing super complex, but nice sweet flavor with some hops and great barrel flavor. Nice beer.

On tap at 10 East. An excellent showing of a barrel aged barleywine and I think it succeeds so well because the base beer is outstanding. So instead of aging it it barrel to make an average beer better, it makes a great beer better. Lots of wet dirt/tree bark, bourbon, spice, dark fruits and vanilla. Flavor echoes the aroma very, very closely. Bourbon, vanilla, toffee, oaked, toffe and alcohol. Very well done.

Didn’t think I’d get any of this - low and behold I scored seven bottles today. Toasted hazelnut with a light etching of creamy foam. Smells are initially boozy and harsh, allow this one to open for a good 10 minutes. then you’ll be rewarded with vanilla, nougat, whiskey barrel, caramel, hops are still in there, but profoundly subdued. Taste ranges from boozy, to sweet to bitter all in the same mouthful. I get lots of sharp alcohol early, then a deep malty character accented with syrup, spiced rum, bitterness, pine sap, toffee and some bits of plum. The body is thinner than I’d prefer, and the carb a little hi with a wet finish. Make no mistake, the barrel added to the intensity of this beer. The barrel did not, however, tone down the beast, only changed the hairdoo. This beer is fucking hardcore. I am really surprised it was in the barrel for over a year, as the beer still seems a little rough around the edges (something I respect in a fresh Bigfoot) but with the added potential the whiskey barrel added to the overall depth.

Tasting at Bruce’s new pad. Lightly hazy red-amber beer. Tidy pale cream coloured head. Palate is smooth with fine carbonation. Smooth malt and smooth bourbon, just a little spice. Fruity tang with mild berries and a whisper of coconut. Light dry finish. Good BA Barleywine.

Bottle. Pours a pale copper with a white head of foam. Pine and herbal notes abound. Light oak and caramel. Some alcohol heat lingers in the back of the throat.

750ml bottle, shared by Jessica. Mostly clear red orange color. Thin off-white head. Few dots of lace. Woody, barrely nose. Some dark fruit. Little vanilla. Awesome toasty malt, light spice, good vanilla. Some alcohol heat, sort of a light burn. Moderate bitter taste, less sweet. Bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation, kind of drying texture, with the alcohol warmth in the finish. Alright BA barleywine, for me. A lot more barrel influence than I hoped for, a lot of wood, I’d have preferred more balanced. Alcohol is noticeable. Some taste of oxidation? Very interesting, big beer to sip on, though, enjoyable for the most part. A good long toasty aftertaste.

Bottle shared by Kenny at Bruce’s new place. It pours deep amber with a medium yellow-white head. The nose is wood, earth, toffee, honeycomb, vanilla, coconut and marshmallow. The taste is smooth, woody, earth, toast, bourbon, alcohol warmth, dried fruit, some astringency, vanilla and coconut with a dry, warming finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Perhaps a touch hot, but rather nice
