3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Clear amber color with a thin film of beige foam. Clear whiskey notes with some alcoholic notes. Taste is also full on whiskey. Sweet at first and bitter on the finish. Feels a lot like an Irish whiskey.

Nose is mostly booze and dates, a touch of candied citrus and caramelized sugar. Flavor is burnt sugar, apple brandy, orange liquer, pine, mild-moderate oak, more whiskey/heat, finishes with grapefruit rind.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. 750 mL bottle, 2015 vintage. Had this one side-by-side with the 2013, and I liked it better, so this will be the rating logged. The pour is a golden brown with a short light tan head. This is decently surprising in accordance to all of the other barley wines we’ve had this evening. The aroma is really hoppy. There is a nice bourbon heat to go with some vanilla and a light maltiness. The hops dominate. The flavor is very similar. The hops are huge and bitter with some brown sugar and light malts, before rolling through a nice citrus finish. The mouth feel is excellent. Thick and creamy with a velvety carbonation and a long, dry, bitter finish. Very good

Bottle, thanks to Brian. Pours clear hazel, small beige head, dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is super toffee, bourbon, vanilla, cherries. Flavor is quite sweet, light plus bitter, rich and malty. Medium body, high carbonation, super hot.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAR 7, 2016 A rich, sumptuous BW with intense but well balanced tastes. The nose is pungent, featuring slightly burnt caramel and toffee, dark malt, booze and dark berries. The casking is very present, but supported by strong taste elements in the barleywine components. Significant American hops, raisins, apricots, caramel, toffee and a touch of sweet rum work well with the oak and the whiskey casking. The hops create a bite in the aftertaste that keep counterbalancing the booziness and richness of the other taste. elements. Superior. An appropriately dense and thick body and medium carbonation tie the bow on this special BW.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
My Bottom Line:
Conifer needles grow through vanilla and candied fruit in this woodsy Barrel-Aged Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam stays atop the misty dark red.
-Alcohol warmth is perceptible throughout.
-Resinous hop bitterness fits with the barrel character.
-Flavor profile is intense yet all components are well balanced.
-The texture is lush and warming. A refined mouthfeel.

750 ml bottle. 2013 vintage, been holding this for a special occasion, today is my 5th anniversary on Ratebeer.com so I think it’s time to crack this. I prefer my Barley Wines slightly oxidized, so I ready for this. Almost no head on a deep clear ruby color. Aroma is subtle in every aspect, dark fruit, deeper malt and whiskey.
Flavor has raisin, figs, light sugar with just a very slight oxidation note through the middle. The finish has the subtle whiskey barrel with lingering oak. The alcohol can’t be found but the warming sensation after the sip is here and gives a slow burn on the way down. The body seems to have thinned out or was never very full to begin with. Oily slick texture across the tongue. After drinking a whole snifter the oxidation notes started to wear on my palate. Should have opened this 9 or maybe 10 months ago. Still all in all a very nice Barley wine.

Did a vertical tasting. Started with a 2014 Bigfoot, then 2015 Bigfoot, then finished with this 2015 BA Bigfoot. Quite honestly, they basically all taste the same. Not really getting much more from the BA version, except I paid a lot more. Pretty much a sweet but very hoppy IPA that happens to have some oak and whiskey taste.

I remember the regular Big Foot tasting a little better. This one has big caramel, booze, some citrus. Well barrelled. Brown pour, some head. Bottle from Dupont Circle store.
