750 c&c from the Arden BevMo in Sacramento, CA. 2013 Expedition. Pours a very dark, ruddy copper with a decent creamy/fizzy beige head. Aroma that seems to have alcohol along with brown sugar. Full bodied. There is a non-burning alcohol flavor - could be residual whiskey flavor messing with me. Burnt coconut and dark fruit seem to be appropriate. It’s not dry, but it’s not sticky. The vanilla/wood aspects are firm. Brown sugar is solid. The wood provides a certain astringency. I’m really curious about the barrel. SN isn’t particular about barrels - most are bourbon, but they do use Tennesse Whiskey and rye barrels. For me this isn’t heavy bourbon. Or even light. It is good. It is bitter. Nice break from BA impy stouts!

Tap sample. Poured dark copper color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy dark fruit, toasted malt, bourbon alcohol and wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy dark fruit bourbon vanilla sweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a complex solid beer.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 hopscotch (8215) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - OCT 9, 2006
Draft... GABF ’06... Mostly clear golden ale with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki head. Excellent retention. Lightly grainy aroma with notes of honey, wood and vanilla. The flavor is a swirl of toffee, alcohol, oak and whiskey with moderate sweetness and medium bitterness. Full-bodied and creamy with lively carbonation. Lengthy, alcoholic, drying finish.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Hazy ruby coloured beer with a thin fine bead and low carbonation. The aroma is quite sweet and malty, light cherry and chewy sweet pale/crystal malt, light vanilla and a lot of bourbony sweetness. On the nose there is a lot of fresh Bigfoot aroma with just an accent of oak/bourbon character. The flavour is quite sweet up front however, with the combination of sweet chewy malts and bourbony oakiness countering this sweetness. There is also a young aggressive hoppiness trying to balance the sweetness off. The beer still seems a bit sticky and young however. On the finish there is an interplay of vanilla and sweet caramelly malt that is quite appealing. On balance, I’d say this is a good brew, but not as good as the original. I suspect a year or two will help it immensely.

Bottle. Pours with an essential clear hued bronze body with a moderate sized off white head that lasts. Aroma still has a lot of hops, pungent pine, grapefruit, pungent alcohol, brown sugar, tannin, burnt caramel and oak. Flavors are very woody, earthy, burnt caramel, vanilla, molasses. Big tannin structure, pretty sweet. Bitter, medium oak, tannin upon hops. Not amazingly drinkable. Fuller bodied, lively carbonation and a boat load of tannin.
2.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 daknole (7204) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - MAR 4, 2013
Caramel colored pour, decent sized white head. Lacing is prominent. This beer is a mess IMO. Overly resiny, barrel notes almost taste like the damn thing was aged in pine trees. The booze doesn’t help and the damn thing got worse as it warmed. Maybe a few YEARS in the cellar will help? Im not hopeful though.
