Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

Beautiful appearance, deep red, off-white head that leaves nice lacing. Smell is heavy on the base beer, nice hoppiness, herbal, woody, bourbon is there, plenty of caramel and vanilla. Flavor is like a normal Bigfoot, hoppy bitterness still cuts through. The barrel is mellow in flavor and adds some booze to the alpha acids. Nice tannic notes are added to the dry American barleywine base. I honestly am not always a fan of reg bigfoot but the barrel aging melds with it it just enough to make it better..

Pours thick. Held up to light, the color is a dark amber. Without backlight, the color is dark brown. Sniffing, I get a mild coconut scent, hint of vanilla, and a medium scent of whiskey. First sip is pleasant. I held the sip in my mouth to let the flavors hold. I tasted vanilla, and dark fruit accents such as black cherry or blackberry which weren’t overwhelming. Most of all and more enjoyable, the lingering taste is whiskey, woody, and slight bitterness. The sip left a mild film in the mouth which is fine as the flavor lingered. This lingering taste was bourbon and raison. This Bigfoot stands out from the yearly release. Barrel-Aged is more flavorful and enjoyable. The only draw back, I should’ve bought two bottles instead of one. Once this beer is off the shelves, that’s it. You’ll never find another unless you buy from a collector who is willing to sell.

Dark brown with red edges. Thick head eminates oak, brown sugars, and roasted dark fruit. Raisin, vanilla, and delicious fig flavors dominate the alcohol and oak. Great dark fruit finish.

On tap at 10 East. An excellent showing of a barrel aged barleywine and I think it succeeds so well because the base beer is outstanding. So instead of aging it it barrel to make an average beer better, it makes a great beer better. Lots of wet dirt/tree bark, bourbon, spice, dark fruits and vanilla. Flavor echoes the aroma very, very closely. Bourbon, vanilla, toffee, oaked, toffe and alcohol. Very well done.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2015 Bottled, 2015 vintage. Pours very dark copper color, almost tan head. Aroma is lots of whiskey and hops. Whiskey is prominent, little bit of vanilla, (maybe a bit of coconut, but that’s not something I would have gotten w/o knowing it’s supposed to be in there), big malt character and of course (this being bigfoot) lots of hops. Some citrus hops are notable. Actually, using whiskey is but not as in your face as other barrel-aged beers. You still get plenty of hops instead of all whiskey. Nice. Flavor is similar, lots of hops up front, and whiskey undertones throughout, and it’s 100% there, you wouldn’t mistake it, but it’s not as aggressive as some other barrel-aged beers. So I like that. Bitter finish is notable. This is excellent. The more I sip this beer, the better it becomes. It’s just so good.

bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Hazy amber brown color, beige head, streaks of lace. Taste is caramel malt that moves toward toffee on the swallow, followed by just enough bittering to keep things in balance. Slight alcohol warms the throat deep in the finish. I don’t detect any bourbon or oak, but no matter - it’s an exceptional brew.

Pours deep dark rich brown. It has vanilla aromas and a mediums head which lasts for time. It has a malty flavor with is highlighted by vanilla notes. Starts slightly sweet but wait there is a powerful kick on the backend which makes this a big hearty drinking barleywine with great flavor. Very very well done. Oh BTW I'm part Sasquatch and we much prefer that terminology. Bigfoot is a somewhat racist term.
