COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

Brown in color with an off-white head. A bourbony barleywine (of course) in the start and finish in both aroma and taste; vanilla, oak, caramel and coconut. Fantastic!

Yuck, I have become a big fan of barley wine over time but I gotta say if this was my first barley wine I would have never had another.

Draught at the Sierra Nevada, Chico, CA.
Cloudy deep amber colour with a small head. Sweet and dark fruitiness and sweet syrupy notes in the aroma. Strong dessert wine flavour with alcohol warmth and sweet fruity hops. Super tasty. A truly great dessert beer.

Pours a deep amber/brown with a nice just off white head. Very nice aromas although alcohol does over power: caramel, bread, hay, cereal, nuts, toast, resin, floral, citrus, herbs, dough, cheese, some leather, banana, clove, cooked vegetables, and vanilla. Actually there is enough going on here that I upgraded the aroma to an eight. Potent but fairly balanced flavors: There is a brief pause before a flash of malty sweetness and then a rush of sour. This gives way to bitter, some salt, and eventually umami. Full bodied, creamy and sticky, with average carbonation. The finish is quite a thing: long, lingering, burning bitter and alcohol. A 4.2 doesn’t quite do this beer justice. Isolating the elements yields this score but... experienced at once it’s quite a brew to behold.

Wood, vanilla, a slight bit of alcohol, fades into pine resin hops. This is quite good.

On tap at the brewery, this pours deep walnut into the glass with a khaki head that reduces to ring lacing. A woody nose is accompanied by alcohol and Christmas spices. The palate on this is full–bodied with a thick and oily mouthfeel. A sipper for sure. Wood and grain alcohol come through the forefront of flavors, introducing a caramel sweetness and burnt toffee mid-palate, finishing with pie spices alongside another burning kiss of alcohol. This slow-drinking, huge relative of Bigfoot himself unabashedly shows its unrelenting strength. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a rich amber color with a finger of fine khaki fizz. Nose has nice toasted grain, burnt sugar, warm bourbon and some date fruit. Palate follows but has a bit more acrid walnut and dark fruit mingling with the softer caramel and bourbon undertones. Hint of grassy bitterness lingers with some boozy dark fruit in the finish. Nice but not really blown away by this.

draft sampler pour a medium clear brown color that had the aroma of bourbon and barley wine. this beer you can put in the box in the back of the closet for a couple of years. one beer that ages gracefully. the flavor was full and delicious. lots of little flavors of the barley wine with the dark fruits and sweet malts melding with the flavor of the bourbon barrel and the oak and vanilla and char....would like to try this one in a couple of years to compare my notes now. overall deliciously great and no alcohol burn to speak of.

22 oz bottle. Tasted on 4/18/15. Bottle from Total Wine Frisco, TX. Aroma was smokey, slightly earthy, leather. The taste was pretty mellow on the hops but still had a well rounded flavor to it. Very nice ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Drink this beer slowly. This is not Bigfoot, this is his angry older brother. Beer pours a dark amber with a half inch of khaki head that recedes slowly leaving a small bit of lacing. Much bolder in every sort of way, except hops. The scent is almost like apple brandy, the grain and alcohol are in your face. The flavor is wood, complex dark fruits, a bit of vanilla, and alcohol. I wondered why Sierra Nevada made bigfoot at such a low abv compared to other barley wines. Age it on bourbon oak for a year, lose 20% volume, and you’ve got a complex 12%+ beer. Pretty sneaky Sierra Nevada. There’s a couple extra ounces in this bottle and you’ll notice it. I say again, drink this beer slowly.

Way harsh, a bit thin. Not really any finesse here. Burns on the way down and little to none when it comes to mellow vanilla and oak bourbon notes. Rather poorly done but relatively tasty I guess...just as long as you can get past the burning.
