This new version of our sought-after collaboration brew with Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton Delaware rested for 10 months in American Bourbon barrels. Barrel-Aged Life & Limb is dark mahogany-brown in color with massive aromas reminiscent of rich roasted malts, with heady notes of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak. Round and early flavors dominate this full-bodied beer, with hints of maple, toasted pecan, and raisin.

Tap at the Rubicon. Pours very dark brown/black with a beige smear. Smells like dark fruit. Full bodied. Flavor is rather prune/Dr. Pepper with some moderate hop. Feels slickish, not sticky. There is a nice touch of bourbon/vanilla, and a light oak astringency. It is very good.

Strong Ale 2012. Mahogany colored pour with a khaki head. Decent amount of oak, some dark fruit, hints of vanilla, and some molasses. A bit of pecan, syrup, toast, and a hint of roast. The flavor is kind of bland and very woody. A bit of vanilla and fruit, but lots of molasses, toasted malt, and a hint of roast. Mild pecan, syrup, and charred wood.

A deep dark stout with no head. In aroma, nice smooth oaked chocolate, light vanilla, woody and smooth. In mouth, a smooth chocolate with oily molasses, vanilla beans, oaken notes, light iodine, quite nice. On tap at Brewvival, Feb. 26 2011.

Tap at CK thanks to argo0. Pours clear ruby with weak head formation. Nose is mega rich bourbon, buttery, toasted coconut, spicy orange peel. Really on the mark. Taste is rich and silky, no wood tannins, toasted coconut and buttercream. Mega rich. Could pass for boss bottle of Firestone Walker Abacus/Sucaba. Very good. About as good as ASAís get.

Sampled from the tap at NotB. Poured a near black with brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a nice bourbon note with dark grains, nuts, vanilla caramel and a hint of dark fruits. Flavor was sweet with dark grains, vanilla, nuttiness, and a hint of dark fruits with a sweet bourbon finish.

In short: A woody bourbonized big toffee-laden strong ale. Good big beer.
How: Tap at Extreme Beer Fest 2011, Night Of The Barrels
The look: Dark brown body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose has moderate-high bourbon presence with vanilla and toffee. Taste has moderate bourbon barrels, thick round creamy toffee, vanilla beans, maple, molasses, sticky candy, earth fruity notes. The wood partially dries out the finish. I thought the barrel aging added as much to the original beer as it took away from it. Iíd say overall it is just as good as the regular Life & Limb was. One of the rare beer at EBF Night Of The Barrels this year. EBF Night Of The Barrels wasnít very good this year but Iím sure Iíll go back next year anyway. Because honestly Iíve reached the point where Iíd suck a ponyís dick for the enjoyment of rich japanese businessmen to get an Extreme Beer Fest ticket, and whatís even more depressing is the fact that Iím only at the middle of my rope.
