Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhalís aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as itís nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Really complex. The barrell aging comes through a lot in the nose but the flavor is really rich with just a hint of bourbon.

Pours a satisfying dark color. Not quite black, but very close. Head is substantial and a nice mocha color. Aroma of overripe cherries and burns. Maybe some fennel in the aroma as well. Flavor is very chocolatey. Extremely rich with hints of caramel as well. This is almost like a desert beer but has enough body and flavor that it isnít overly sweet. I only started to notice the bourbon flavor after the first couple of sips. Nice creamy texture in the mouth too. This beer is a pleasure to drink and kicks it up a step form the regular Narwhal, which is also delicious. This is one of the best big beers I have had in a long time.

Pours black as hell with a thick, foamy, light brown head that stays long. Nose is boozy, with heavy nougat, fig, and date notes. Taste is quite sweet, but nicely balanced: notes of umami, caramel, burnt sugars. This is a remarkably good brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Huge beast of a beer. Pours black with some tan head and limited lacing. Nose is coconut and vanilla and milk chocolate. Flavours of coconut, espresso, milk chocolate, vanilla, graham crackers. Taste big sweet big bitter. Full silky/creamy body with medium carbonation and big alcohol burn to the finish.

October 30, 2015 - bottle that the wifey just picked up from MGM yesterday. Black pour with a nice amount of head that didnít stick around for long. Aroma had some cocoa, vanilla and mild bourbon; wood came out as it warmed. Taste had a bit of the roast, but strong on the cocoa with some vanilla. The bourbon was mild, but most noticeable in the finish. Drinking this side by side with the regular Narwhal from 2012 and 2015 and the BA is best.
