Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Bottle from consumers in Buffalo #shelfturd. Pours dark, small light brown head. Nose full of oak, light bourbon. Taste is more of the likeness of milk duds, chocolates, faint bourbon, vanilla. Body is a tad thin, strong booze burn and boost level.

A- pours an opaque and thickish dark cola with a finger of frothy cocoa brown head. Decent lacing. S- burnt caramel, toasted malts, dark chocolate and bourdon (te usual suspects) do not mince. Nice hint of charcoal and rhubarb contrast after the initial rush. More herbs, grass, fresh graham cracker and some faint honey in the back. Toasted marshmallow. Gets more campfire/s'more-sequences it opens up. One way or another, you can only describe this as rich. M- medium to full oily body. Fair carb. Good burn. T- rich and complex up front. Lots of chocolates (dark and milk), toasted malts, coffee, earth, oak and bourbon. Cola, twigs, licorice, tobacco in the middle. Plastic marshmallows again. Lots of alcohol too. Softly trailing end tends toward the bitter with some hops, grasses and minerals. Some honey works its way in though.

Bottle at Anchorage Dec ’14 Tasting: Poured a black with a thin ring of brown head around the rim. Aroma was strong alcohol burn loads of booze. Taste was sweet but super alcohol burn that prevented me from picking out many of the complex flavors. Hope to try this after it has sit for a bit and revisit.

750ml from Brick Spirits. Poured a medium density pitch black with a smaller creamy head. Aroma of bourbon, burnt marshmallows, honey, dark fruits. Medium bodied, stronger carbonation and a ton of lingering heat. Flavor is a bit harsh, lots of heat, lingers, meh. Flavor is better than the palate. Notes of burnt marshmallows, dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, burnt toast, super dark fruit skins.

On Tap at Bier:Thirty, Boise Black with a thin tan ring. Big aroma of sweet campfire and licorice. Bourbon and oak are there but not over the top. Flavors are similar. Rich chocolate, tootsie roll, more licorice molasses and a little of the Bourbon Barrel with a little heat at the end. . All players are a great ensemble.

Bottle. Black pour, with a tan head. Big bourbon stout. Chocolate, burnt coffee, roast, bourbon, boozy, moderate vanilla, wood, and alcohol. The body is a bit thin, but not bad. Quite hot, but tasty.

Pours opaque black with a finger of tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves little lacing. Aroma isn’t strong but I get bourbon, cherry, chocolate and some dark bread. The taste has bourbon in the front with some sweetness and some cherry cordial from the fruit, dark chocolate and vanilla flavors. Also has some nuttiness, a soft roastiness and toasted coconut in the finish. Finishes dry. Mouthfeel is semi slick with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Very good and well put together beer. Only criticism would be that it could have a fuller mouthfeel.

Bottle before the birds game. Pours pitch black with brownish top. Medium to fuller body. Notes are coffee, dark chocolate, oak, roasted and caramel malts. Not into these styles that much these days but this was very drinkable all things considered.
