2014.08.24 - Sierra Nevada Ovila Dubbel Barrel Aged - 375ml bottle in tulip glass.
Aroma: Hard to describe. I donít really get any malt or typical aromas, I get a bit of a vinegar smell. Not like a spoiled vinegar, just a very tart sort of aroma presumably from barrels. 6/10
Appearance: dark brown, mostly opaque, small frothy off white head, about 1/3 finger. 4/5
Taste: light to medium sour 6/10
Palate: medium body, oily feel, soft carbonation, sour finish. 3/5
Overall: meh. I love a lot of the Ovila beers, this is kind of a miss for me. Iím drinking it and it isnít horrible but I likely wouldnít buy it if it was (still) on the market. The regular dubbel was OK but just a bit off, not nearly as good as Quad. Making that taste more like wine is not a great combo for me. If this had been bourbon or brandy aged Iíd probably be singing a different tune. Points for experimentation and variety, but as Iím not much of a wine fan this does little for me. 14/20

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Golden with a slight auburn tinge. Aroma is yeasty with dried fruit and a little metallic. It has flavors of caramel, dough, raisins, and wood. Very spicy for a dubbel and it has lively palate which makes a bit more exciting.

Sampled in a bottle that was aged for two years. A crisp malty brew. Pours dark with a white head on it. The barrel taste is subtle at the starts and lingers

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
bottle, rated Aug 2013 - Amber colored, this beer has an aroma led by dark fruit, especially red wine. The flavor is very sweet with dark fruit, oak, and vanilla. Really tasty. Itís smooth and medium to full bodied. It has a gentle, sweet, oak finish. Some may find this beer too sweet, but itís very well done. Excellent.

Draft. From notes. Loads of dark fermented fruits. Somewhat funky, decent bit of the wine barrel comes out. Would love a bottle of this to Tay down for a bit.

Bottle. Pours with a hazed amber hued body with a thin off-white head. Aromas are of leather, dark fruits, some tannin, alcohol and leather. Flavors are fruity, leather, tannins, plums, leather, minerals and dark fruit, medium carbonation, very lost, a bit boring.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma is a balanced fruit note with some light malt character along with a nice wine character. Light raisin and prune with a hint of plum and cherry. Tannic, vinous red wine notes. Malt has a bit of a toasted bread and light chocolate notes, but the fruit and barrel notes are most prevalent.
Pours a moderately dark copper brown with a lot of ruby highlights. Thin light tan head that recedes to the edges fairly quickly. No lacing and small legs.
Flavor starts with a hint of a tannic character which helps balance all the fruit notes. Tons of prunes, plums, and cherries with a hint of raisin. Light oak notes with a moderate red wine character. Light bitterness and no hop flavor. Malt notes are light but there are hints of caramel, toasted bread and light chocolate and toffee. Slight red wine alcohol note in the finish.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low tannic astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Slight sticky sweetness on my lips in the finish.
Overall a fairly nice beer but the wine barrel character overwhelms the malt leaving fairly little of the classic Belgian malt character. A decent yeast character with nice fruit esters.
