COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

On tap at the SN taproom. Mahogany color with tan head. Aroma is strong vanilla character and bourbon. Flavor is dark fruits with bourbon and vanilla. Palate is medium bodied with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel and a long dry finish. Overall a nice barley wine with some good barrel aged notes.

THOUGHTS: Wow! Very intense. The barrel seems to have smoothed out the Big Foot a little. Hid alcohol fairly well for the huge ABV. I could smell it a couple feet away. No pun intended. TECHNICAL: Drank 4/21/2013. Bottle. Poured a dark, brownish amber with some red highlights and a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. It also had nice legs. The aroma had heavy caramel and molasses; light citrus hops, lime specifically; ever-so-slight pine hops; grape, raisin, prune, apple cherry; hints of wood; hints of butterscotch; brown sugar; vanilla; bourbon; whiskey; Koo-Aid mix; and that barley wine smell. The initial flavor was moderates sweet and slightly bitter and acidic; while the finish was heavily sweet, moderately bitter and lightly acidic with a long durations. There was caramel, brown sugar, that barley wine taste, bourbon, whiskey, wood, , dark fruit, raisin, prune, vanilla, citrus rind, hops and pine hops, apple, grape, molasses, maple syrup, citrus hops and alcohol. The medium to full, leaning more to full, body was oily with soft but tingly carbonation and a lightly alcoholic finish.

Bottle: Thanks... ? Forgot who opened this one. Murky, deep body, nearly opaque & raw sienna in color. Light-khaki head on top that settles quickly; spotting lacing along the glass. Pungent bourbon & whiskey booze on the nose, more so standalone rather than integrated with everything else. Wood, plums, burnt vanilla, brown sugar... Underlying sweetness present, but still overshadowed by the booze. Same notion on the palate. Lots of brown sugar, raisin, molasses, & caramel but the whiskey rings true. Heavy boozy heat & a strong, largely tannic barrel profile. A little bit of brown sugar coated figs towards the finish with a slight kiss of ashy & leafy hop notes, though not nearly as hop forward as original Bigfoot (of course). Lingering tannin & whiskey aftertaste. Not bad, for sure, but perhaps a little too heavy up front with the whiskey aspect.

"Whiskey barrel aged 750. Like classic Bigfoot, a little rough around the edges. Ample hops and bitterness still shine through the barrels, whic tastes like whiskey, not bourbon. Boozy and big, I think this will sit down well - though I like it now."

Bottle: Thanks Tivaj: Served in a Chouffe glass: Small creamy head/lacing. Almost clear ruby colored beer. Aromas of brown sugars, figs, dades, prunes, earth... Flavours of wood, some alcohol, some grains, malts, honey, barleys, bitters, grass, herbs, bitters... Aftertaste is a mix of bitters, wood, malts, herbs, some sticky sweets and herbs... Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, fuller bodied and a creamy sticky texture.

Pours dark mahogany into a snifter. Off -white head with little retention recedes to nothing. Oak and vanilla aromas. Soft with oak and hot caramel front to back.

Big beast of a beer. Murky khaki color. Both big resinous pines and sweet toffee in the aroma. Taste was sweet, boozy, and piney. Lots more toffee. Thick mouthfeel, low carbonation. Nice.

Sample @ RBWG, Asheville. Thanks to whoever supplied this! Deep amber pour. Very woody and hot on the nose. Some caramel-dipped tree bark. Chocolate and roasted grain flavor. Some leather and tangy red fruits. Quite oily, supple. Decent.

Sample at a cool-ass bottle share. Pours a hazy auburn color with a quickly forming khaki head that settles to a ring and leaves some touches of lace. Nose involves lots of hops, pine and mint coming forward, along with plenty of oak. Pretty sweet, and also quite bitter. Bigger body, oily, syrupy, with a drying oaky finish. Pretty cool brew, though not necessarily a huge improvement over the original. This was a fresh bottle from this year, so age I imagine would do wonders. Still, cool to try what was a really hoppy barrel aged beer.

Deep caramel red with a foamy lasting head. Dried fruit and leather smells. Butter scotch taste that moves to a leather finish. Nice full mouth feel.
