Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

750 c&c from the Arden BevMo in Sacramento, CA. 2013 Expedition. Pours a very dark, ruddy copper with a decent creamy/fizzy beige head. Aroma that seems to have alcohol along with brown sugar. Full bodied. There is a non-burning alcohol flavor - could be residual whiskey flavor messing with me. Burnt coconut and dark fruit seem to be appropriate. It’s not dry, but it’s not sticky. The vanilla/wood aspects are firm. Brown sugar is solid. The wood provides a certain astringency. I’m really curious about the barrel. SN isn’t particular about barrels - most are bourbon, but they do use Tennesse Whiskey and rye barrels. For me this isn’t heavy bourbon. Or even light. It is good. It is bitter. Nice break from BA impy stouts!

Bottle from Craft Beer Cellar. Poured into a Snifter, poured a deep amber-brown, with a 1cm beige head that lasted a good long while. This is only the 3rd or 4th Barleywine I’ve had, so comparisons are hard. Hops and rich, sweet malts dominate the flavour profile, with brown sugar, dark dried fruit and spice showing up. Lots of alcohol warmth. Oak is there, but not as strong as I expected. A good strong beer to enjoy now that the weather’s turning colder - certainly not a summer sipper.

A great barrel aged barleywine from Sierra Nevada. Pours a fantastic deep ruby red with a tan head. Smells of whiskey, vanilla, caramel, rosemary and barleywine. Taste is whiskey all around, with some caramel, molasses, a smoky quality and vanilla in the finish. Had in the bottle.

750 ml. 2015 edition, 11.9% abv. Pour is an uncloudy, red-tinged copper with a large sticky-spongy head that settles to a thin creamy topping. Aroma of orange-vanilla toffee with touches of chocolaty resin and tea leaf. Front flavor of orange toffee turns to a melange of vanilla, chocolate, leaf and toasted oak. Long smooth finish of whiskey, chocolate and barrel. Medium-heavy body has a smooth low-medium carbonation and a dangerously drinkable balance for such richness. I was anticipating some alcohol burn, but there’s only just a nice warmth at the finish.

Clear amber color with a thin film of beige foam. Clear whiskey notes with some alcoholic notes. Taste is also full on whiskey. Sweet at first and bitter on the finish. Feels a lot like an Irish whiskey.

Nose is mostly booze and dates, a touch of candied citrus and caramelized sugar. Flavor is burnt sugar, apple brandy, orange liquer, pine, mild-moderate oak, more whiskey/heat, finishes with grapefruit rind.

Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. 750 mL bottle, 2015 vintage. Had this one side-by-side with the 2013, and I liked it better, so this will be the rating logged. The pour is a golden brown with a short light tan head. This is decently surprising in accordance to all of the other barley wines we’ve had this evening. The aroma is really hoppy. There is a nice bourbon heat to go with some vanilla and a light maltiness. The hops dominate. The flavor is very similar. The hops are huge and bitter with some brown sugar and light malts, before rolling through a nice citrus finish. The mouth feel is excellent. Thick and creamy with a velvety carbonation and a long, dry, bitter finish. Very good

Bottle, thanks to Brian. Pours clear hazel, small beige head, dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is super toffee, bourbon, vanilla, cherries. Flavor is quite sweet, light plus bitter, rich and malty. Medium body, high carbonation, super hot.
