3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a cola color. A tall (3 fingers), fluffy mocha-shaded head caps the body off well. Retention is pretty good, and the lacing left behind is monstrous.
S: At first, it’s fairly chocolaty, but once it’s allowed to open up, it develops a strong note of hop-derived lemongrass. I really don’t pick up much Belgian yeast, sadly. Still, this has a very intriguing nose.
T: There’s less chocolate than the nose suggested - in fact, the dark malt qualities are really buried beneath the hop flavors. That’s not exactly a bad thing. Here, they don’t sneak up on you; instead, the lemon, grass, white grape, and subtle (sadly, too subtle for me) tropical fruit notes play well with the doughy yeast notes and low bitterness. Only a slight note of toast on the back end. It’s well balanced when it’s chilled, but the trademark Sorachi Ace flavors (read: lemongrass) tend to overly dominate once this warms up. Not bad, though.
M: It’s creamy with a good (not overly heavy) body and carbonation that isn’t overbearing. The finish isn’t very dry, but thankfully yeast astringency is kept in check. I wouldn’t call it easy to drink.
O: This one’s okay. I think it’s main problem is that the concept is more interesting (Belgian-style Black IPA with highfalutin’ Sorachi Ace and Nelson Sauvin hops) than the actual brew itself. For this to be a total success, I reckon it would need more Nelson Sauvin notes, a bit more roast, and a drier finish.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
33cl bottle. Pours black with thin tan head. Floral hops, malt, bread nose. Flavour is sweet creamy coffee with a slightly bitter finish. Biscuit in there with earth and nuts. Thought this was pretty nondescript.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at Tipplers Tap. Black and thick with a lasting cream head, laces well, big hops flavours and malty hints. A big favoured beer that is surprisingly smooth.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poirs opaque black with a 2-finger dark tan head. Aroma is mild, mostly roasted malt but with a touch of citrus. Medium body, lightly oily with a long finish. Dark, roasty malt flavor up front that gives way to citrus hops.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Persistent tan head tops the dark red body. Good body with more spice than hop. Finish is good and with the right amount of bitterness.

Bottle at the Hangover. Citrus and funky aroma, herbal, sherbert. Great stuff. Taste is equally good. Crystals! (?) Lemon and weird, tropical fruit touches, light roast, lots of biscuit.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours out a deep dark almost black color with tan head. Lots of lacing on the glass. Has a nice Belgian floral aroma, dark roasted malts in the background and citrus hops. Smells amazing! Tastes a bit funky at first but has a nice bittersweet citric finish with some char. Palate on the beer is rich and full.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
[355ml bottle, the Beer Hive, Edinburgh] Black pour, not surprisingly, fumes up pretty quickly in the glass, with a slightly off-white head. Aroma is lemon, coconut, earthy ash. On the flavour, that strange edge of Nelson and Sorachi gives an odd sweet vine/bubblegum crossover that buts into the slightly smoky malt profile. That last part works with the Belgian yeast, but not everything else - not all at once, anyway

First time tasting a black IPA, not what I expected. 12oz bottle. Poured black with a deep long lasting beige head. Bursting with zesty citrus hops and the more you stick your nose in the more toast and coffee you get from it. Again to taste it starts off being IPA all the way but then roasted coffee, toast and caramel. I like it
