Originally Beer Camp #27 from 05/2010. A juxtaposition of the senses, this beer has the appearance of a dark porter but with the flavors of and American India Pale Ale. The rich ebony-brown body has a strong ho aroma with hints of orange peel combined with roasty malt aromas. The flavor is an interesting mix of resinous American hops and a light milk chocolate and slight smokey character from the dark grains. The finish speaks to IPA with a bold and bracing blast of citrusy hops.

Keg at Kickbacks, RBWG. Pours brown with a fine, beige cream head. Dark bread on the nose, some burnt pine. Medium sweet flavor, some booze, light cocoa, faded piney bitterness. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, toasted brown bread, earth, pine. Not bad.

Tap at Kickbacks, 2010 keg. Not sure why they aged this Black IPA. Pours a deep ruby with awesome head formation and retention. Sheets of thick lacing. Nose is dusty, cheesy. Taste is powdery, spicy, dusty, minty. Palate was thin, dusty, chalky. No body left, no density.

On tap at Rattle n Hum during their Sierra Nevada event. Pours a deep black with a thick tanned beige head. Roast, earthy and full of citrus and caramel. Big earthy roast, lots of toast and citrus. Toast, caramel, and long grapefruit on the end with some spicy roast. Well done Patrick.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Pitch black pour. The nose is softly cocoaish with a touch of piny hops on the finish. A little bit earthy with a distinct milk chocolate character. The nose has an earthy hoppiness and some light milky sweetness. Soft and surprisingly restrained on the the hopping. Decent balance. Lean through the middle with some fairly sticky sweetness toward the finish. As it warms the hoppiness picks up a distinctly pine flavour on the finish. A little bit of resinousness toward the finish as well. Fresh and quite tasty - although it’s more of a hoppy stout to me.

Draft. Pours near black with a beige head. Chocolate malty aroma with light citric hops. The flavor has floral and fruity hops on a chocolate malty base. Nice.

2/26/13. On tap at Kickback’s. Thanks for tapping this rare tick, Steve! Black pour, maybe deep brown, with a nice tan head that sticks and laces a ton. Nice roast aroma with a touch of acidity and aged, earthy hops. Nice malty flavor with earth, roast, chocolate, and earthy hops. More of a porter after time, but still a tasty one!

Sample at the brewpub on 8/4/10. Pours a clear brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of molasses and chocolate with grassy hops. Chocolate flavor up front giving way to grassy hop and a bitter cocoa finish.
