COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beer Camp #17 November 2009 ABV 7.5 IBU 60

This classic West Coast style India Pale Ale is loaded with pronounced citrus and grapefruit rind hop notes with a hint of sweet malt in the aroma. The smooth malt flavor is backed by an assertive hop character from generous amounts of “new-school” aromatic hops, including the Amarillo and Simcoe varieties used during dry hopping. This bold and aggressive IPA remains drinkable and will keep you coming back for more.

Seventh rating of the beer. Tap at the T-Room. Nose of dank, orange, creamy hops, dark grass and pepper. Bright orange color. Flavor is great - just like the nose. Very clean and refreshing.

Tap at City Beer Store. This beer was brewed at SN’s beer camp, which was attended by City Beer’s owner, Craig. It’s a very good IPA with a big hop presence. It’s mostly pine/citrus hop notes, probably leans toward pine (a bit like SN generally). It’s quite dry with good yeast presence. I’d normally worry about too many cooks spoiling the pot with this sort of endeavor, but HopStar turned out rather well. It’s not my personal favorite of a hop bill (I lean toward Simcoe dominant (D)IPAs), but there are no real faults. The aroma is strong and clean. It’s easy to drink and quite satisfying.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2010 (Rating #5600) Draft… Beautiful amber ale with a copper hue and a small, creamy, white head. Good retention. Resiny, piney, musky, litter box nose. Lots of simcoe, amarillo and cascade hops really smack you right in the face. Full-bodied and creamy with stinging carbonation. Caramel and toffee malt sweetness countered and beaten down by earthy, musky hop bitterness. Crisp, bitter, tongue-numbing finish.

Sampled at the City Beer Store in SF. Pours light brown and clear. Drinks really crisp with really nice hopping. Overall a really nice drinking IPA, well crafted.

Draught sample from Once Upon a Vince South in RIchmond, Va. Thanks a million to the guys there! Clear amber with a medium off-white head. Aroma is floral and citrus, big and pronounced but all sweet. Flavor is also sweet citrus and floral, and caramel. Very carbonated the whole time.

Appearance: deep copper with ruby highlights under a soft generous pithy head. Leaves lovely lace from start to finish, much like a lady’s fine dress.
Nose: sweet and hoppy and resinous, though not harshly so. Green in the back with pine then hop cones. Honey coated melba underneath for some crunchy and some sweet.
Palate: full thick sticky mouthfeel; very likeable. Awesome explosion of hop resins, oils, and sticky goodness with orange essence and hop juices galore. Bitter leaf finish in the back top of my tongue. Pine and pine trees. Sharp stab of resins in the finish; poignant. Slightly sticky lips for tasty smacking. Nothing lingers in my breath though I love how the bitterness is so big in the middle it makes up for it and then some. Toasty golden brown with honey crunchies underneath. Opens up as warms up and smoothes out just a tad, losing some of the bite in the back.
Final Thoughts: one big hop bomb of a beer and I loved it. Wish it was available more often from Sierra Nevada in my neck of the woods, but I’m glad I had a chance to taste it anyway.

MaltDawg (1344) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - FEB 5, 2010
(Sample Date: 2/2/2010 Source:Mekong) Lots of C hops in this one I suspect. Orange grapefruit catty hop aroma over caramel. Clear orange golden with large mousey white head. Citrusy resiny hop flavor with robust bitterness. Fairly good dose of caramelized sugar sweetness to balance. Finish is medium but dries quickly. Would have liked to have another but alas the keg died.

On tap at Toronado. Poures copper with a thin off-white head and a magnificent floral pine aroma. There is a substantial and tasty caramel malt base with excellent, but almost overwhelming hop bitterness. Hopheads will love this one.

Draft at City Beer Store. Light brown pour. Aroma-piney hops, grass, slight candy undertone. Taste-grapefruit, piney hops followed by a nice, sweet malt finish. Full bodied and good.
