Much maltier than the version they brewed last year. Big caramel nose, the hops are there but with very little bitterness.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle via 12 pack from Spirits Rt 166. Poured a thick dark red body with a a larger frothy beige head that leaves gobs of lace all over my DFH tulip. Aroma of pineapple, molasses, caramel, grains and soap. Fuller bodied with strong full almost stingy carbonation and a rather bitter finish. Flavor of burnt caramel and molasses, toast, yellow grapefruit rinds and dry pine needles. Sadly this is the best of the bunch of this years Beer Camp, sad.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle (and three more coming up!). Beautiful huge hoppy nose, heavy citrus with pine and resin, some caramel and grass, but man, that citric hopping is fresh and very attractive. Pours a dark mahogany with reddish highlights and a creamy tan head, lace. Taste is bone dry and tongue scraping, some alcohol showing, deep caramel and toffee, earth, strongly bitter but not scathing or overly aggressive, just a firm and chewy example. Tremendous pine! Light spice, faint floral notes (even lavender) and medium citrus (in a turn-down from the appetizer). Even manages some deft tropical pith/rind. Lightly crisp medium-full body, has some gin-type spirit spicing, light pepper, very pleasant. Very light touches of soap. Alcohol on the whole well-integrated, more like a 6% IPA, and the overall effect despite the intense bitterness/resin is one of smooth calmness! Wow, I might even like this better than Celebration, which is clearly a cousin. A great one, really jumps outta the goddamn glass!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft. Pours a clear deep reddish amber, with an off white/light biege head. Citrusy hops, caramel, clean malty backbone, and finishes quite bitter. Not exceptional, but decent for the style.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a dark, ruby amber with a thick foamy head. Aroma is slightly spicy with a round citrusy nose. Flavor is very well balanced. Good solid hop favors - spicy and herbal with sweet malt and tobacoo finish. Very good.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle to glass. Pours deep copper/red with a light caramel colored head. Aromas packed with dank pine, citrus rind, and tons of carmel. The flavor is mouth tingling from the massive amount of hops! Carmel, tropical fruits, and warming alcohol clean up the finish. Well done and i’ll have some more....

Imperial Red is another example of an overall comment I have of the entire Sierra Nevada portfolio of beers: Technically clean, but lacks depth of flavor. Sierra is the sixth largest brewery in the U.S. and its mass production level prevents it from delivering exceptional beers in any category. We owe Sierra a thanks for pioneering the craft beer business, but unfortunately, its beers have become more macro than micro.
