Sierra Nevada Old Cantankerous (Stock Ale) is a collaboration beer brewed on 9/04/09 at Sierra Nevada’s R&D Pilot Brewery for Beer Camp #13. Beer Camps #13 & #14 consisted of the gold medal winning homebrewers from the 2009 American Homebrewers Association (AHA) National Homebrew Competition (NHC). Old Cantankerous was brewed with a combination of seven different domestic & continental malts including two types of Caramel, Chocolate, Pale, Pils, Munich & Vienna for a rich complexity with five different hops being used for balance & character including Magnum, Perle, Sterling & the New Zealand hops Pacifica & Southern Cross which were used in the hopback for additional aroma & complexity. The famous house ale yeast was used to top ferment & condition this American Strong Ale/Stock Ale for approx. 8-10 weeks. Like previous camp beers, Old Cantankerous is only available in select markets and at the brewery’s taproom & restaraunt until it’s history!

A murky russet colored beer that is crowned by a large, chunky, off white head. Smell is caramel, brown sugar and hints of christmas spices. Full bodied with caramel and roasted malt undertones, nutty, oak ... almost brown ale-esque. M- Medium bodied with quite a bit of carbonation. D- Definitely on the tamer side for an old/stock ale but it is very smooth and has a full flavor and bodied without being overpowering.

On draft at PP Carlsbad. Dark, dark brown pour, almost black, with creamy tan head. Musty roasted malts, earth, dark fruit (plum, raisin, date), slight sourness, spice, molasses, and some piney hops. This is excellent, highly enjoyable.

On tap @ Dunderbaks. Pours a murky brown. Nose is big roasted malt, hints of sweet cherry, spice, floral hops, that clean crisp malt signature of SN, caramel with hints of smoke. Flavor is full of caramel and toffee, noble hops, cocoa, mild oxidation that fits the style, smoke and fruit esters. A bit thin and I would have liked this to be a bigger beer, but a nice beer none the less. They should consider keeping this on rotation. Cheers to JB at Dunderbaks for getting this one for his tap list.

A: Pours a nice burnt orange. Nice tall foamy white head that exhibits good retention and lace. S: Rather sweet and malty smelling brew. Lots of caramel and nutty toffee mostly. Light notes of sweet fruit and pine. T: Malty up front. Caramel for sure. Very light nutty notes with toasted bread, and hints of mild sweet summer fruit. The finish has a hint of bitterness before a nice sweet piny sweetness. M: On the fuller side of medium, smooth, tasty. D: Good, this home brewer can brew for sure.

Draft at maproom. Pours a glowing dark garnet brown, slightly hazed, thin but dense creamy froth. Aroma of sour grains, light spices, rich smooth malt, English with some piney hop character. Flavor follows, very similar to great divide old hibernation, rich smooth English malt, dusty, some sharp molasses, strong piney hopping plays nicely off the sticky malt, milk chocolate, medium bitterness.

Bottle shared by brew3crew. Poured a dark clear copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted caramel malt, chocolate and sour citrus aroma. Medium to heavy body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer that is excellent for style.

Bottled 750cl (PBF, #13)
Slightly hazy amber color, steady creamy off-white head, lace. There is some resiny and even chocolaty(!?), malty aroma. Medium-bodied. Sweetish, plums, bread, hops. Lingering sweetness and nice hops in the aftertaste. Even light salty note. This is very good and does not have any "Sierra Nevada" house flavors.

Sampled on 10/1/2011. This old ale pours a light amber gold color from a 750ml/22oz(?) corked and caged bottle. Large sized white foamy head with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is malty, fruity, bready and sweet. A medium bodied old ale. The malts are caramel, fruity, and semi-sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Decent carbonation. Nice balance. Very smooth taste. There is a hint of wood and maybe a little oxidation. Nice dry malty/caramel finish. Very tasty beer. Purchase at the gift shop at the Sierra Nevada Brewery. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
