Back in August 2013 Ei8ht Ball sent two members of their team out to Chico, California to pay a visit to Sierra Nevada and to partake in what has become a well-known project called “Beer Camp”. Ei8ht Ball’s very own beer guru and Burgers & Beers Co-Host Brian Youtsey (Yatzy to everyone else) and assistant brewer Andrew (Turtle) Ritterbeck were among twelve lucky citizens to head west and be part of a once in a lifetime experience to experiment with the crew and equipment at Sierra Nevada.

After days of preparing, the group came up with a concept and recipe to brew their very own batch of beer on one of the biggest and most cutting edge systems in the world. Fast forward six months later and a Golden Rye Ale, brewed with five different hops including Mosaic, Experimental #644 and Simcoe

Draft. Amber goldfish pout. Smells like body odor, old garbage can. Flavor is more redeeming. Medicinal, pretzel, some floral hops, caramel. Bad.

Draft to taster. Looks solid; a transparent deeper gold with thin white lacing. Smells of mild grain and rye spice. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Okay; wish it was more robust though.

Draft. Pours a dark gold with a half finger of white head. Aroma is mostly citrus, with light notes of bread and rye. Taste follows aroma. Medium bodied with a surprisingly thick and creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long, dry finish. Very good overall. More mild than I prefer but very drinkable.

Draft at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. The aroma and flavor have toasted malts, a decent spicy rye bite, light fruit character, mild plus bitterness to the finish. I would actually like a bit more rye bite to this, but it’s nice that some local guys went out to brew this one.

Taster on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Clear golden color, slightly orange. Little slightly off-white head. Good rows and bits of lace. Smooth, crisp, lighter carbonation. Very lightly soft. Lightly dry finish. Bready malt, lightly spicy rye notes. Kind of mild, but nice. Hint of citrus, lightly spicy, lightly piney hop. Flavor profile is like that of a golden ale, pretty reasonably snappy and easy drinking golden ale. Good moderate bitter taste, light sweetness. Solid rye golden ale. Would be better appreciated by the pint, naturally.

Draft. Poured clear dark copper color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted and produced good to excellent lacing. Moderate rye & sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.
