3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeMcPhee (7622) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 19, 2011
Tap at Pony Bar drunk alongside the Vice. Slightly hazy pale golden pour. The aroma is lightly spicy with a fairly hoppy aroma. Leanish malts - but I suspect they could be even dryer. Spicy and a little bit citrusy. As it warms more of the lemony citrus comes out. The peppery flavour is enhanced as well. There seems to be a citrusy hop element in here in addition to the yeast contribution - but I’m not 100% on that. Quite a nice saison.

On tap at the Gingerman when I stopped in with Joe after Paul’s tasting. Pours a very clear yellow with a thin white head. Dirty musk and faint brett. Clean musk with a light bitterness. Very dry, crisp and clean. Nice big lingering musk, dry and faintly bretty on the finish.

Draft. Pours a hazy golden body with a white head. Spicy yeast y hop tones. Citrus, bitter hops. A bit sweet mint, herbs, and fruit toned esters. A bit brighter with a soft fruit citrus tone. I preferred this to the vice.

Tap at RNH. Pours a slightly lighter version of Vice- almost a golden yellow with a green tinge to it?- then a quickly diminishing head- to nothing. Aroma is grassy- slightly hoppier than the Vice- some slight old dusty yeasty notes- phenols and slight sulfur from fermentation- almost get a green minty fruity herbal hop like sterling- peppery and spicy- kinda like a dupont that wasn’t fermented quite right. Flavor is almost a slight bubblegum phenol, light grass, slight toasted malts, corn, doughy pils, spicy peppery notes, light hops, green, fresh and zesty dry spicy finish. I kinda liked this one too.

Tap at RnH. Odd yeast character in this one, kind of eggy, super dry, parsley, salt. Not as traditional as the Vice, but a solid saison none-the-less.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jcr (1946) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - NOV 10, 2010
Draft at Gingerman NY. LIght golden body, clear. Fizzy, white head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of toasted grain, hay, pepper, coriander, flowers, perfume and herbs. On top of it all is a musky earthiness. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes light to moderately bitter, lightly to moderately sweet and lightly acidic. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Variety of spicy tastes along with the earthy undertones give this saison a nice complexity. The peppery, bitter finish was a bonus, though it is a bit sweet and could be dryer. Overall, a very nice saison.
