Commercial Description:
Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Lots of hops. There’s almost enough malt to balance. Medium body with a little creamy texture. It finishes with a slight grapefruit bitterness.

(Bottle, 2009 vintage, at Hilpeä Hauki, Helsinki, on 2009-05-22) Deep amber and clear. Medium sized and lightly tan coloured head. Hops, grass and malts in aroma. Full bodied and dry palate with medium carbonation. Malts, hops, grass, strong bitterness, sweetness and alcohol in taste. Malts and strong bitterness in aftertaste. The bitterness was a bit too strong for my taste.

12 oz 2009 bottle courtesy of the dorkmeister, Adrian. Pours a dark semi clear honey colour with red tint. Had a light off-white head which left a lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, hops and more hops. Also, if you can get past the hops, there’s an aroma of citrusy fruits and malt. Taste is very hoppy, citrusy, dry and on the bitter side.

09 bottle. Huge hop aroma. Loads of citrus, grapefruit, rich malts and caramel. Flavor is bitter hops, citrus and floral hop sweetness, booze and malt sweetness. Finishes very bitter. Needs some age.

2009 Big beautiful head, dense. Amber color with hit of red. Big aroma, both malty and hoppy, a ’full bodied’ aroma. Flavor: alcohol, bitter, grapefruit. Malt on side of the tongue. Rich and full, per Mike, ’Vibrant’ Lots of flavor and feel. A meal of a beer.

12 oz bottle 2009 - Pours cloudy amber with a red tint, low frothy white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is strong and fruity, you know you’ve got something with bold taste from smell alone. The first taste is very pungent, and has a very long lasting aftertaste. You can really taste the alcohol in the aftertaste on the first few drinks. As your glass gets empty the taste hits less hard due to the overwhelming aftertaste. This has to be the one of the longest lasting, if not the longest lasting aftertaste I have ever experienced in a beer. Strongly recommended, fantastic brew.

2009 bottle. Aroma is big! Hops are huge in the aroma along with some nice pine. Smells like a hoppy Christmas. Pours a clear mahogany with a soapy head. Flavor is a journey from beginning to end. Some malt sweetness up front, hops begin small and grow towards the finish. Aftertaste is bitter and dry with some alcohol burn. A complex beer for so young, I’d love to try it after a few years.

The look and smell of this barley wine is beautiful to say the least. This brew is balanced very well also, however this example tends to be a bit on the bitter side. Though not as high in alcohol as other brewery’s barley wines, Bigfoot Ale packs a well rounded malt punch with a extremely intense hoppy bitterness. If you are a fan of barley wines but not so much IPA (or Double IPAs) I would shy away from this beer, otherwise, Step in with a BIG FOOT.
