Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA May 10, 2009 I’ve had a vertical from 2000-2008, so far but i really enjoy this most fresh. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Lots of dark fruits and a strong bittering earthy hop bite, tobacco and caramel. Nice brew. petematte46 (212), Dallas, Texas, USA May 6, 2009 I know this would be less hoppy with age but even now it does not hurt this fine beer. Enjoyed it very much appearance gets high marks for color and nice head. Finishes very well. kazooka (39), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA May 6, 2009 Strong hops, fruity and floral, light malty aromas. Opaque reddish-brown, with white tan head receding into a ring. Heavy bitter flavor. Smooth, medium bodied, thin texture, and softly carbonated into long alcoholic bitterness. Meatmallet (120), Salem, Illinois, USA May 6, 2009 Pours a murky reddish brown with a huge cream head.Smells of grapefruit, hops, and citrus. Overall the smell is very balanced and fresh.Taste of bitter pine flavored hops hits me first. Has a good alcohol taste throughout. Finishes with a malt and a nice alcohol burn. The taste is better than it smells. evergreen0199 (259), London, Greater London, England May 5, 2009 Bottle from Oddbins. Deep amber pour with a reasonable head. Nice aroma of pine, lemon and grapefruit. Brutal bitterness almost too hard to drink. Taste of grapefruit, malt and it is almost sweet. I’ve had this beer a number of times and have never really been a fan but I often buy it when I see it on the shelf. Quite well put together but overrated IMO. larryLSB (139), La Selva Beach, California, USA May 3, 2009 Poured from 12 oz. Dark amber with minimal tan head. Mild nose at first, opened up as the beer warmed, I couldn’t wait! Figs, raisins and a little vanilla. Hops were subtle. Taste was similar, but tasted a little too carbonated. Overall enjoyable. tokyogoat (505), San Diego, California, USA May 3, 2009 12oz bottle poured into snifter
Pours a gorgeous dark ruby red with a tight creamy pale tan head. Head dispurses quickly and leaves a puddle of foam and incredible lacing.
Smell is not as arromatic as it could be, but smells very clean and hoppy.
Taste is very good. Hops are sharp, but clean and not piney ot citrusy. Dark but not too roasty malt backbone.
Lots to think about with this beer. Just a fantastic representation of american barleywines. Imperial-John (154), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada May 1, 2009 2007 courtesy of HogtownHarry. Murky reddish brown with off-white foamy head that thins as it laces glass. Faint but nice sweet honey malt aroma. Bittersweet honey & grapefruit, boozy but mellow, good carbonation for barley wine. Leaves major bitterness on back of throat. Very warming going down.
