Commercial Description:
Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Pours a murky reddish brown with a huge cream head.Smells of grapefruit, hops, and citrus. Overall the smell is very balanced and fresh.Taste of bitter pine flavored hops hits me first. Has a good alcohol taste throughout. Finishes with a malt and a nice alcohol burn. The taste is better than it smells.

Bottle from Oddbins. Deep amber pour with a reasonable head. Nice aroma of pine, lemon and grapefruit. Brutal bitterness almost too hard to drink. Taste of grapefruit, malt and it is almost sweet. I’ve had this beer a number of times and have never really been a fan but I often buy it when I see it on the shelf. Quite well put together but overrated IMO.

Poured from 12 oz. Dark amber with minimal tan head. Mild nose at first, opened up as the beer warmed, I couldn’t wait! Figs, raisins and a little vanilla. Hops were subtle. Taste was similar, but tasted a little too carbonated. Overall enjoyable.

12oz bottle poured into snifter Pours a gorgeous dark ruby red with a tight creamy pale tan head. Head dispurses quickly and leaves a puddle of foam and incredible lacing. Smell is not as arromatic as it could be, but smells very clean and hoppy. Taste is very good. Hops are sharp, but clean and not piney ot citrusy. Dark but not too roasty malt backbone. Lots to think about with this beer. Just a fantastic representation of american barleywines.

2007 courtesy of HogtownHarry. Murky reddish brown with off-white foamy head that thins as it laces glass. Faint but nice sweet honey malt aroma. Bittersweet honey & grapefruit, boozy but mellow, good carbonation for barley wine. Leaves major bitterness on back of throat. Very warming going down.

Finally a rating for Bigfoot. Always a go-to Barleywine. Very balance and always drinkable. Dark muddy brown usually with not much head. Aroma is sweet and when fresh has a nice hop bite. Taste is smooth and sweet with a little bitterness. Ages really well and I prefer aged bottles.

This has just became one of my favorite brews, as the rating shows (though I’m weary of giving it a 5 tbh). The aroma is full on hops but I’m picking up a little skunky type scent too. It pours a nice deep copper/amber color with little head retention (though its better when warmer I noticed). Strong hop flavor, which I didn’t realize barleywines were known for. It starts out strong, then slightly mellows before finishing with another strong bitterness. Some malty hues but not much. Good level of carbonation a nice mouthfeel to it. One of the smoothest high percent brews I’ve had to date.
