BREWMUSKCLES (1062), New Jersey, USA Apr 17, 2009 stinky ear wax aroma. well endowed malt and moderate hop character of pine wood to this slicky alcohol brew that is smooth manly and belies you ’cigar’ ’smoke’! quite woody with a recessed sweetness that is revealed smooth tangy as chalky but not chalky really. i suppose there is a balance of sorts but combat in the brew characteristics clearly exists. a bold adventurers and expeditonists brew in celebration of conquest. zizzybalubba (335), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA Apr 16, 2009 2009 edition, 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine. Pours dark orange, almost brown, with a thick, creamy head. Head mostly diminishes rapidly. Aroma is lightly hoppy with some sweetness. Flavor is bitter grapefruit with a malt backbone for a great blend of sweetness. Long and pleasant finish where you fully appreciate the grapefruit flavor. A very well balanced barley wine. ben4321 (946), Rockville, Maryland, USA Apr 12, 2009 Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s 4/12/09, for the rating (not my first drinking of this one)
Aroma: Fruits, caramel, some hops
Appearance: Nice reddish brown beer, thin cream head, decent lacing
Flavor: Hoppy bitterness - some citrus here, with just enough malt backing to balance it out properly
Palate: A nice mouthfeel, and a good amount of body
Overall Impression:
A really solid barley wine that leans toward the hoppy side. I haven’t had one of these for a while before tonight, and had forgotten how tasty it was. guerinfbfan (32), Elmwood Park, Illinois, USA Apr 12, 2009 Nice red-brown color. Not a lot of head. Nice fruity taste. Very hoppy. I really enjoy this beer. merlin48 (507), New Tazewell, Tennessee, USA Apr 11, 2009 Mostly clear, dark amber body with a small offwhite head. Aroma of toasted caramel and resinous hops-floral, pine, and grapefruit. Medium body with appropriate low carbonation. Taste is mostly bitter hops, grapefruit rind and pine. Herbal and spicy notes. Solid cararmel malt backbone. This is the 2008 version and it is an excellent example of an American barleywine. Tasty! floydo15 (7), Pennsylvania, USA does not count Apr 8, 2009 One of my favorite beers so far, up there with dogfish 90 and three floyds pale ale. Great dinner drink, has a lot flavor, and fills you up pretty good. Not easy to find in PA though. DarkSong (101), Dacula, Georgia, USA Apr 7, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours reddish brown with a medium off white head. This is a heavily hopped and very malty ale. It tastes of toffee with a nice roasted and burnt resinous taste. This is the first barley wine style beer I’ve had. I would describe it as complex but very enjoyable. Coltrane (108), South Carolina, USA Apr 7, 2009 A nice beer with, of course, an absurd amount of hops. Enjoyable for me because I find most barley wines too sweet. Quite carbonated, almost too much. For the price and availability, a tremendous beer.
09 vintage, consumed fresh.
