Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

12oz bottle with commonmac. Mahogany with small head. Sweet alcohol nose. Aggressive from the start. High sugar and high alcohol, . Sharp tingling finish. Drying alcohol sticks with you for a while. Not a ton of complexity. Better barley wines out there but this isn’t bad, considering it’s not a big style for this brewery.

2014 bottle. Pours a murky copper orange with a mostly fading off white head. Aroma of caramel, pine, wood, red fruits. Taste is of caramel, vanilla, pine, wood, little boozy on the finish. Light oily mouthfeel, soft to medium carbonation.

Courtesy of Slovak Sniper! Pours a rich amber, with a dark fruity head. Aroma notes include deep fruity esters of plum, raisin, and licorice. It has a rich mouthful of malty grains, with notes of plum, raisins, bread, licorice, and a slight bitter finish. The alcohol is nicely hidden, this is a superb Barley wine!

Bottle pours out a clear chestnut beer with two-finger beige head. Many components in the aroma: red berries, cherry drops, some esters, dry coffee beans, chocolate, toffee, some pine or grass. Full mouthfeel leads into a malty but bitter finish.

Bottle consumed at the commonshawn common compound in a brand new Clown Shoes glass. Murky amber and copper color with nearly half finger of tan head. Aroma is a sweet caramel and malty. Taste has a healthy dose of alcohol complementing a dark, almost sour fruit characteristic. More bitterness than expected from the style. Caramel and a subtle nutty quality. Lingering bitterness. Syrupy at first but gives way to a lighter mouthfeel towards the end. It’s not my favorite of the barleywines but it’s not bad by any stretch.

Bottle. Aroma is malty caramel and fruity hops. Flavour is very sweet at first but a lot of hops bitterness takes over. A long very bitter finish. Body is medium and texture is oily with soft carbonation. Slightly alcohol burn in the end. A beer that goes to extremes.

On tap at McNally’s Pub in Hillsboro, OR. This is the 2014 vintage, aged at the brewery, then longer at the pub. This is almost two years old. Pours caramel brown with a light tan head. Aromas are lovely with malts and caramel and dark fruits and raisins. Taste is the same, but also has a notable bitterness and a gentle sweetness that balances nicely. Medium full mouthfeel and slight bitter finish. This is a nice sipping brew worth savoring.

Bottled, 355ml, aged 7yrs from Beers of Europe, Kings Lyn, Norfolk. Copper to brown with off beige head. Initially there is a drying caramel character to this, some vegetable bitterness, some hints of soy. A rounding hoppy element emerges later, giving a fullness to palate. Toasty notes in the close. Decent, if not mind blowing.
