Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Burnt orange in color.... Brown sugar and hop filled aroma... Not your typical barleywine... Definitely has some bitterness to balance the sweetness and alcohol content... Enjoyable beer...

Early sample 2009. Pours a dark amber with very small white head. Aroma of a nice cascade hops and fruit. Sweetness at first, turns to bitter, and leaves an alcohol hotness. Likely will be better in a few months.

Bottle. Pours amber in color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is of fresh hops and a little alcohol. Taste is very bitter, fresh hops, and a slight alcohol finish. It is almost too raw and fresh at first, and has a somewhat grassy flavor at first, but gets better as you finish the glass.

On tap at Binnys South Loop. Pours a dark amber with a frothy off-white head. Lots of carbonation. Aroma is of caramel, malt, hops, alcohol, and pine. Taste was very hoppy, with pine, caramel, malt, and very slight alcohol. The ’09 version is way more hopped, and has less of a harsh alcohol bite than last year’s. Lingering pine taste. Very drinkable, almost to the point of absurdity. Far too drinkable for a barley wine.

Pours ruby-ish brown with a thin, lasting tan head. Aroma was hoppy with sweet malts. The mouthfeel was creamy..very dry. Bitter hops well balanced with roasty malts. Very dry finish. I’m not a huge fan of barley wines, but I like this one a lot.

Medium sized light tan colored head that leaves great lacing atop this deep amber beer. Sweet hoppy aroma. Bitter grassy flavor on the edges of the tongue and back of the throat. Sweet citrus and light malt notes with a bit or raisins. Smooth light to medium body.

This barley wine has a fruity aroma, true to the style, but for this style has an unusually large amount of piney hops in the aroma. The aroma is quite pleasing. The appearance is beautiful, a combination of ruby red and chestnut brown, clear, white head. The flavor is definitely bittersweet, an upfront mix of caramel, fruit, and citrus hops. The finish has a killer citrus hop bite, which lingers quite a while after swallowing the beer. Again, unusually hoppy for the style, but that kind of works here. A very enjoyable beer.
