UPDATED: MAR 19, 2013

Hazy dark amber color with red shades; generous rocky head, stable, with nice lace. Very nice aroma. Malt, caramel, hops; but also a bit soapy. Full bodied, with strong caramel flavor, sweet, but mostly bitter, with aggressive resins; the final is maybe too bitter, with some roasted nuts.
Better to wait a few years...

Wonderful aroma, with lovely hops and malt. Thick, malty, hopped, extreme. Maybe less mature than in the bottle, but so impressive!
2003-11-06, bottle, vintage 2003, 9-5-9-5-17=45
Hazy dark amber color; thin creamy head. Strong malt and phenol nose; caramel and nuts; fudge, gingerbread. Strong body, malty, more character than many others Barley Wines, loads of caramel; very well balanced by a bold bitterness, leading to an extremely strong and long final. Aaaah the hops…

UPDATED: NOV 12, 2003 '01 Not my favorite barleywine, but geez, even a so-so barleywine is fine by me. Nice color and head. I don't care for the over hopped nose and palate on the Bigfoot. I've always preferred the carmel/molasses side of the equation.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2004 2004: After a rerate, this is actually a tad bit too hoppy. Just tons and tons of bittering hops. One of the best looking barleywines, big head and lots of lacing, super-dark amber color. I don't remember last year's being so bitter, maybe that's new this year??? Still very good, but could probably use a lot of time to mellow out.

This beer is definitely not for the weak. It comes at you like an angry junkyard dog. The barleywine style is not for me, I like something that sips a little easier, such as, well anything else.

2003: Cloudy and ruby orange. Nice thin white head with better than average lacing. Nice fruit and hoppy aroma with alcohol tingling your nose on a deep sniff. Taste mainly hops. Wonderful thick malty body. Alcohol is noticable when swallowing.

This was just way too hot, could not get much olfactory or gustatory sensation beyond the ethanol tidal wave. It was a 2003.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 15, 2004 I tasted the 2002 and the 2003 side by side tonight, so I will give an overview and note some differences. Both poured a ruby amber color with a small yellow/tannish head that left alittle lacing on the glass. The 03 had a strong aroma of hops, grapes, and alcohol while the 02's aroma was much less noticable, but it certainly was fruity. The 03 tasted still way too bitter, nice hop bite, had a slight red wine taste (hence barleyWINE style) and a warming alcohol presence. Whereas the 02 had already began mellowing out nicely while still being fruity and hoppy. My conclusions: the 03 is still too young, so I know for the future, glad I have 3 of each year left.
Rerate, 2004 sample, I needed to bump this up a couple points. This is a super fine, hoppy barleywine. Very enjoyable.
