09 bottle. Pours brown with off white head. Aroma of caramel malts with a big hoppy nose. Taste good caramel malts, with good dose of sugar, counterbalanced by bittering hops. Solid barley wine with a stronger emphasis on hops..

color of translucent rust; darker at focal point. aroma of crunchy toffee malt and fragrant hops. flavor is so balanced! the same notes found in the nose are present, but here the hops really kick into high gear. too many barley wines are ultra syrupy malt fests. others are hardly different then bad IIPAs -- this is the ulterior. bitterness jogs through the plain with caramel sweetness hand in hand. and beyond that perfect balance, the hops are powerful enough to satisfy the drinker that longs for bitterness. a true classic of the style, and an all time great.

Re-rate. On tap at the Flying Saucer in KC. Pours an almost see through ruby red-brown with a monster, dirty cream colored, dense head that dissipates very slowly and remains heavily laced throughout the session. Sexual. Aroma is very hoppy. Lots of juicy and floral grapefruits. A bit sugary, but definitely not the candy sugarish smell of a lot of barley wines. Sweet and rich dark fruit malts. Flavor is intense. Loads of juicy, citrus hops with a moderate bitterness. Semi sweet sugar maltiness balances the big hop profile out very well. Lots of caramel and a bit of booze. Finish is long and moderately bitter and sweet. Palate is clean, full, and chewy. Overall, I was disappointed in the bottle version of this a couple days ago, but the draft version was amazing. Damn good barley wine. Lots of bitterness and a subtle sweetness make this really intense. I look forward to cellaring the remains of my bottles and can only hope they turn out to be as good as this was on tap.

This is a really solid west coast barleywine that is not for jokers. Dark reddish-copper color with a thick yellowish beige head. Sweet malts and lots of citrusy grapefruity west coast hops on the aroma. Starts off with big-time fruity hops and sweet malts, and finishes with warmth, bitterness, and a slight alcohol kick. Very full-bodied and makes you feel the 9.6% ABV. Not recommended for beirut or flippy cup.

bottle. 2009 vintage. for whatever reason i have never picked this one up. but i finally bought a six pack so i could give it a shot. fills my tulip glass with a nicely colored orange brown elixir. a half an inch of light tan head forms a smooth and creamy cap. the aroma is mostly sweet, with lots of brown sugar and caramel turning up, but also displaying strong pine and herbal notes. the palate is medium to full and the finish is pretty clean. lots of hops on the back side help to keep the finish from being too sweet. in a blind taste i would have pegged this for double ipa as the hops are strong and sharp. the bitterness is intense. overall a nearly fifty fifty split between malt and hops. if this is barley wine it is definitely an american one.

2009 bottle. Pours a brilliantly clear red ruby hue, modest off-white layer of foam sustains. Nose is filled with an amazing range of fruits (citrus, pineapple, grapefruit), grassy hops, and spices, remarkable! Flavor is big bold dark fruits, most noticeably plums and raspberries with grapefruit and pineapple lingering, grassy tones and pie crust enter midway, high hop flavor and moderate bitterness, finishes dry and bitter. Medium-full bodied, moderate carbonation, thick and chewy texture. A consistently great barleywine, this vintage is much more fruit-forward than I remembered but the balance remains despite the hefty alcohol warming, great aromatics here!

Nice aroma of piney hops, and much more hop flavor than I was expecting. Lots of noticeable citrus and hoppy resiny goodness. The beer is sweet, but with a strong flavor of unsweetened chocolate too. Sweet, long finish

Bottle. Poured a dark caramel color with red highlights. Aroma of hops and malts. Tastes of roasted malt and a hint of grass with a bitter hoppy finish. A good overall beer.
