BrotherGrendel (545), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 8, 2009 2009 bottle. Pours a brilliantly clear red ruby hue, modest off-white layer of foam sustains. Nose is filled with an amazing range of fruits (citrus, pineapple, grapefruit), grassy hops, and spices, remarkable! Flavor is big bold dark fruits, most noticeably plums and raspberries with grapefruit and pineapple lingering, grassy tones and pie crust enter midway, high hop flavor and moderate bitterness, finishes dry and bitter. Medium-full bodied, moderate carbonation, thick and chewy texture. A consistently great barleywine, this vintage is much more fruit-forward than I remembered but the balance remains despite the hefty alcohol warming, great aromatics here! ilherps (212), Carbondale, Illinois, USA Feb 7, 2009 Updated: Feb 12, 2009Nice aroma of piney hops, and much more hop flavor than I was expecting. Lots of noticeable citrus and hoppy resiny goodness. The beer is sweet, but with a strong flavor of unsweetened chocolate too. Sweet, long finish aguyintx66 (78), Humble, Texas, USA Feb 7, 2009 Bottle. Poured a dark caramel color with red highlights. Aroma of hops and malts. Tastes of roasted malt and a hint of grass with a bitter hoppy finish. A good overall beer. trapez (765), Hilleroed, Denmark Feb 7, 2009 Bottle. Rich hops aroma mixed with plums and chocolate. Redbrown colour with beige head. Intense bittersweet hops flavour with a touch of dark chocolate, wood and nuts. Lon lasting bitter aftertaste. RedXIII (127), Powell, Ohio, USA Feb 6, 2009 Updated: Sep 1, 2009WOW! One of my first good Barley Wines and this one lives up to the hype. Pour is ruby red with a fluffy tan head. Looks like American Strong Ale. Aroma is fruity, hoppy, malty, with a hint of booze. Flavor has amazing balance. Strong hop and citrus flavors, some bitter pine, all perfectly balanced with sweet caramel malt. Not detecting the 9.6% abv. Bitter finish of an Imperial IPA. BE CAREFUL! This stuff is strong, drinkable and will put you on your butt! ksurkin (354), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Feb 5, 2009 2009 bottle from grape and gourmet poured into a tulip pint. pours a very dark amber nearly ruby color with a thin beige head and great lacing. aroma is fresh, spicy hops with fruit notes of grapefruit and orange and big pine notes. some sweet, syrupy, dark malt notes also peak through in the aroma. flavor truly made me feel like i was drinking a DIPA. hoppy spiciness dominates initially with big citrus and pine. a big malt presence with flavors of molasses and brown sugar add depth and balance out the high %abv. mouthfeel is full bodied, slightly syrupy, but extremely smooth with high carbonation since it’s fresh and nice alcohol warmth on the swallow. a damn good american barley wine that is drinking like a DIPA right now. can’t wait to taste it at 6 months. captaincass (45), Everson, Washington, USA Feb 5, 2009 Updated: May 1, 2009smells very piney, looks amazing rich and reddish. perfect balance between raging malt and raging hops. can;t really taste too much booze, amazing hop aftertaste. nathan30533 (138), Dahlonega, Georgia, USA Feb 5, 2009 Pours a lite brown/ dark amber color with a white forming head.
