Commercial Description:
Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

purchased the bottle at john’s market in portland strictly for it’s name- Bigfoot- (a legend in the northwest-) poured nicely into a tasting glass with good lacing and head- cherry red/ coppery colored- sweet on the palate initially, but definately a bit too much lingering hop tanginess for my personal liking- definatly a one-beer beer- warms your belly up!

25th expedition 12 oz. bottle pours with aroma of fresh mountain air, pears, brandy and candied fig. Head retention is great and lacing is wonderful. with a nice murky color that represents candied fruits and alcohol. Palate is soft and heavy. viscous, silky Flavor is sweet at first then yields gradually to an eventual overcoming bitterness. I found the 9.6% alcohol to weigh in heavily, while the pervasively bitter aftertaste sours an otherwise pleasant sipper. Overall, a nice barleywine from a big producer.

2008 Vintage bottle. Pours syrupy with brief small, dense foam. Good ruby-like color. The flavor is disappointly sweet and the aftertaste is caramel. I hope to like this better after some aging.

2008 version. Very little aroma most likely due to age. Pours very dark amber with a two finger light tan head. Lacings are plentiful. Taste is sweet roasted malts with a very full earthy hop bitterness. A hint of dark cocoa from the malts. Mouthfeel is very nice with moderate carbonation. The alcohol is well hidden by the full body. Very drinkable for the style. Will probably update or edit this review when I try the 2009 version in my beer fridge.

Really really good. This is a beer I could drink all day long. Taste is mostly hops and citrus. Almost tastes like an IPA, will always be down to pound a few of these. Sierra Nevada’s best beer. Highly recommended.

2008, On tap at Sunswick in New York. So I have had this from the bottle, and now on tap and I preferred it on tap significantly. Poured ruby red with a small head that lasted thoughout. Big hop smell and taste, but there was more to it than that. Found it just deliciously strong, and tasty. It had my mouth buzzing with flavor, and my head doing the same. Very slight alcohol burn, as opposed to the bottle which definitely needs some time to mature.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Charlottesville. An overly hopped and not well balanced beer. I’m afraid I don’t get the hype.
