beergeek86 (33), Clarksville, Maryland, USA Mar 14, 2008 hands down the best barley wine i’ve ever had... definately one of the best beers ive ever had. pours a beautiful ruby color with a descent head. aroma - caramel, raisins, dried fruit, malt, flowers, somewhat salty, grassy. flavor - butterscotch, malt, hops, vanilla, perfectly balanced... amazing bittersweet hop finish that lingers on and on. strong carbonation contrasts well with the sweetntess. alcohol is definitely detectable, yet well contained... very intense overall. tastes like more alcohol than 9.6% palate- medium mouth feel, very smooth! amazing. love this beer... i want to try it on tap soooo bad! inkubus27 (237), Highland, Indiana, USA Mar 14, 2008 One of the best tasting barley-wines outside of Behemoth. Flavor is of citrus hops and tons of malt, and the palate leaves very little astringency. One of my new favorites! sinkr (212), Lusby, Maryland, USA Mar 14, 2008 Bottle->snifter: Pours a large, lasting, frothy, light brown head with excellent lacing atop of a murky dark amber body. Malt aroma is heavy, containing molasses, caramel, and perhaps a tinge of grain. Hops are perfume-y and have a hint of lemon to them. Other aromas are pear and grape. The flavor’s duration is long, heavily sweet, lightly acidic and bitter. The body is medium, sticky, and exhibits average carbonation with an astringent aftertaste.
Very nice for a barley wine and a pretty decent price for what I’d consider to be a beer bordering on exotic and hey, they give you a whole 6 pack, versus the 4 packs a lot of other places’d give you for a beer of this caliber. hoeg0015 (11), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 13, 2008 on tap at the muddy pig in st. paul, mn. a nice deep cranberry pour. love the way the red color tints this hearty beer. this is a beer. solid alcohol content, but it doesn’t drown out the fruits and caramel flavors. one pint of this is enough to get me to a good place, and that’s what i want in a beer. blklab2007 (932), Connecticut, USA Mar 13, 2008 Updated: Feb 20, 20092008 bottle poured into a snifter has a nice brown ruby color with good carbonation for a barley wine. head is a thick half inch on the pour fading quickly to a thin lacy layer on the surface. aroma has great sweet fruity hops, more so then i remember but i have not had one in some time. caramel, citrus peels, brown sugar, and thick malt round out the nose that is just enjoyable to take in. mouth feel is medium with some thickness and a good hit of carbonation to power it over the tongue. more malt in the taste then i expected, thick and chewy with sharp hops. fruits just are fantastic with some sharp dryness and bitters finishing it off. really has a lot of ipa. qualities that i personally like, huge beer with an abv. to make it a power house. gallac30 (29), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 13, 2008 Pours with a dense brown color and beige head measuring a few fingers width. Aroma is that of a fruity mixture with a floral hops smell. Flavor is initially bitter followed by a sweetness given by its chocolaty and fruity components. jimhilt (1662), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Mar 11, 2008 Pours with a cream, five-finger head, fades very slowly and leaves a good lace. Light-medium carbonation and heavy bodied. Clear amber color. Nose is mostly hoppy. Flavor is sweet almost syrupy but hops take over and aftertaste is a tart grapefruit. High ABV is hidden. $1.50 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, MA BEERGUY007 (206), Scotia, New York, USA Mar 11, 2008 Got this one from a co worker. Pours a reddish color with a nice head. Very malty, reminds me grapefruit on first sip. Bitter. Reminds me of Stone Ruination.
