sawyej26 (18), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 11, 2008 Bottled. Complex malty bittersweet aroma. Dense ruddy brown complexion with modest head. Decent malt and very bitter overpowering hop presence followed by a sweet subtle maple syrup and raisins with hints of chocolate. phobos1031 (71), Paradise, Nevada, USA Mar 11, 2008 the only time i ever had this, i was cooking at the Boonville Beer Festival. this dude from Sierra Nevada stepped thru an open window in the kitchen and started dispensing right from the pony keg. it was good, really high in alcohol, and super hop spicy madness. drank 3 pints and went out into the field to light shit on fire. DickDunnigan (26), Boise, Idaho, USA Mar 10, 2008 Crystal clear, dark ruby in color, citrusy hop aroma with some sweet malt overtones. Woodsy flavor, with some raisins and toffee. Great malt backbone with strong hop bitterness to match. Smooth mouthfeel, no real alcohol bite. Hops are very present, almost overshadowing the malt complexity, which is a little unusual for a barley wine. Then again, this is a great example of Sierra Nevada putting their own signature spin on a classic style. This one’s a winner. Collint (450), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Mar 10, 2008 2008 bottle. Poures a ruby redish color. Ver thin head, yet it is there. Very hoppy aroma. Flavor is very hoppy and dry and bitter. This beer dosn’t really resemble the classic barley wines I have had in the past. It is more hoppy. I like the special 25th bottle, but the old one was much cooler. Got one of these in the saving box for aging. In the new bottle’s picture I swear you can see the face of Bigfoot in the left mountain. The river also has a giant footprint in it, duh. Very nice beer scoobysnak (249), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Mar 9, 2008 Comes forward with a fairly pillowy head that has a good mix of softness intermingled with huge bubbly goodness. Lacing already highly visible. A reddish color that is really pleasant. The aroma is that of a IPA with a more prevalent sweetness, that of grapefruit and a slight orange citrus smell that is really good. Taste is really interesting. It has a really unique sweetness that is hard to describe, so I won’t even try. Good hops flavor and a malt backbone in the afteraste that leaves good memories. Alcohol warmth is nice too. HomeBrewHawk (263), De Soto, Kansas, USA Mar 9, 2008 12 oz. bottle 2008 vintage served in brandy snifter.
Pours a clear amber with a tall fine bubbled white head.
Huge piney fresh hop aroma. Some caramel malt as well.
Medium to full bodied with some initial malt sweetness followed up with an aggressive hop bitterness. Hops have a slightly soapy taste. Mouth puckering dryness. Alcohol is warming.
This was tasted fresh. I prefer Bigfoot with at least a year of age on it. The flavors seem to round out more for me. It’s still a classic either way. GMUcrew7 (353), Mason, Ohio, USA Mar 8, 2008 Pours nice deep amber color with a big, light beige head. Aroma is great combination of caramel and toffee malts with florally hops. Flavor is big, the sweet caramel malts are immediately present, the bitterness of the hops come through at the finish and combine to make great balance. The mouthfeel is heavy, leaves decent lacing behind and the high alcohol is very well hidden. turbothy (716), Bonn, Germany Mar 8, 2008 Pours dark amber, no head. Floral aroma. Extremely hoppy and bitter, but not unpleasant.
