3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 freeofthoughts (522) - Raytown, Missouri, USA - MAY 7, 2012UPDATED: AUG 18, 2012 2012 pours ruby amber red with creamy beige head. Aroma of orange citrus and pine with sweet malt. The taste is powerful bitter piney and resinous with a barley wine flavor under all the hops. As many have probably said it is like a darker malted iipa, there is hops in the front and in the finish but the barley is still robust and abundant. There is a smooth slightly creamy feel when it is colder and that turns more dry as it warms. The carbonation is not too lively and very fitting. Enjoyable for sure, no matter the style.

Bottle from Plonk (2013 release). Dark reddish-amber, strong resiney/piney hop aroma with some sweet caramel and butterscotch sneaking through, maybe some banana cake too. Flavour is all hop bitterness up front but sweet malt and some alcohol warmth round out a really nice (winter) beer. "It’s a barley wine, Jim, but not as we know it". Excellent.
