Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Appearance is a clear brown with reddish tints. Aroma is a mix of malt and hops. Taste is wonderfully balanced -- the rich and intense malt content is balanced with the high hops. Aftertaste is a hop bitterness. Overall, this is a very well balanced.

Aroma is vintage Sierra Nevada hoppiness, mixed with some brown sugar and dark fruit. Spicy, earthy aroma, different for a barleywine. Beautiful dark amber color with a tiny ring of white foam that leaves good lacing on the glass. Taste is bitter up front but then reveals some barleywine characteristics. A little malty and has some sweetness in the middle and end of each sip. No booze burn at all. Palate is outstanding with just the right amount if carbonation. Overall, this is just ok. It's not really a barleywine. I love hops, but this comes off too bitter for me. I will age a few bottles, hopefully this beer changes into something I like better. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours dark red with a lasting large fizzy off-white head. Aroma is lightly hoppy and flowery. This was a great barley wine!

2010 Bottle. Molasses, brown sugar, nutmeg aromas. Very creamy but a really dry nutmeg powder finish. I could drink a lot of this and forget its almost 10%.

Aromat słodki, słodowy i owocowy, delikatnie chmielowy. Barwa miedziana, piękna piana świetny lacing. W smaku dość wytrawny. Wyraźna goryczka. Brakuje ciała i słodyczy, perfekcyjnie schowany alkohol.

4-pack, sipped on throughout the week. Aroma is piney, citrusy hops, caramel malts. Flavor is hop forward with a lot of pine tree flavor and thick caramel, sweet malts. Intensely flavored. Quite bitter.

First time I tried this about 15 years ago, I thought the alcohol content was higher. Tried again a few months ago. Pours a darker-medium brown, slightly amber color and has a strong barley and yeasty smell. Leaves a nice lace from the thickness and alcohol. Taste is semi-sweet at first but goes down bitter and very hoppy. Barleywine is not my favorite type of beer, but this is on the lighter compared to some of the heavier 11-14% ones.

Old rating. Very solid barley wine. Big resinous and piney hops, sweet and chewy malts, some dark fruit.

2013 vintage opened 5/4/15. Pours a dark brown with whipped cream thick eggshell head that lingers and dissipates so slowly that you dont notice until its gone. Aromas of molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and bunt cookies. Caramel, red grape juice, raisin, plum, alcohol, and bitter orange peel which lingers - assertively - long into the finish. Thick and sticky mouthfeel. Another year or two and this will be better, I would think.

2014 vintage consumed Apr 2nd, 2015. 12 oz pour from room temperature bottle into a stemmed tulip glass. Moderate pour produced a large white head. Clearly lots of carbonation. Color is a beautiful red. Opaque. Nose is sweet and fruity, like candy. Mouthfeel is a little thin, but not bad. Taste is bitter and dry. Floral, fruit (both citrus and tropical). A bit of a yeasty aftertaste. Layers of flavor here-- evolves as it sits in my mouth. An interesting beer. I can see why its a classic.
