Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Aroma is slightly boozy with a lot of hops. Pours light brown with a good off white head that sticks to the glass. Taste is malty to start with a little booziness. Finishes dry with a hoppy, bitter aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not for the subtle, this brutally overhopped IPA-style “barleywine” comes from the bigger is better US school of craft beer. Attractive brown amber color with cream head that quickly dissipates. Bit of traditional barleywine malt sweetness on the nose quickly overwhelmed by piney "citrus." That’s even more so in the gladness, where "big" and "powerful" tramples on nuance. Let it sit long enough and a bit of complexity emerges with toffee, but why wait? Just eat a bowl of hops. On the slightly good side, the 9.6 percent ABV, while high, is reasonable for a barleywine.

Sweetness comes out of the glass. Then comes the hoppiness before the bitterness. 330ml. 2.7std drinks. 9.6%. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is very hoppy and thick. Notes from grapes, red fruits and alcohol. The taste is strong caramels, slightly vineous before the hops jump in and strangles anyone who tries to oppose. Long bittersweet finish. I guess it would gain from some storage time, but my problem is that I can’t have a beer this good laying around for too long.

2014 bottle. Pours a deep caramel/ruby with a half finger, khaki head. Aroma is a big, sweet caramel with bread, pine, resin, and hints of dark fruits. Really nice. Taste is large and aggressive but balanced. Sweet caramel, bread, and darker fruits blended with bitter pine, resin, and a touch of citrus. Ends with a big, bitter, resin aftertaste. Medium-full body with a medium carbonation. Medium syrupy/resin texture in the mouth with a sweeter finish. Overall a huge, American barley wine. Caramel and bread mixed with huge resiny/piney hops. 2014 bottle. Can’t wait to cellar.

"one of the hoppier barleywines on the market, for better or for worse. i like this one to mix things up a little. not as thick or malty as others, but full bodied and delicious. Better fresh. "

Clear dark amber, thick tan head, streaks of lace. Taste is syrupy caramel malt with a lightly bittered edge in a finish that includes alcohol warmth. Strong, but very little change, start to finish. Good, not great.
