It has a strong malt smell with the sweetness of some hops mixed in. It is brown in color with a light brown head. It has a fruity burst on flavor on the initial taste with an beautiful balance of malt. This is an excellent brew!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Transfer from BA review on 2-22-13-
Poured from bottle into snifter glass
Appearance- The beer pours a mahogany color with ruby red highlights and a small white head. The head fades quite quickly leaving a great level of lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is big and malty with a strong presence of a pine and earthy hop aroma. Mixed with these aromas are some port alcohol and spice aromas as well, giving the brew a very warming smell.
Taste- The taste of the brew is as the nose would predict. It begins with a strong malty and bready base with caramel, toffee, and cherry flavors that bring a nice balancing sweetness to the taste. As the taste advances further some of the hops detected in the nose begins hitting the taste buds with the sweetness losing much of its potency. The hops are mainly of a pine and herbal taste and grow stronger as the taste moves to the end. Along with the hop flavor so too arrives flavors of the alcohol and spice that were sensed in the nose. These flavors grow stronger more toward the end as well and when all combined the flavors leave a heavy and warming taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the thick and chewy side with the carbonation level on the lower side. The thick and chewy nature of the brew wonderfully suits the robust flavors, and when coupled with the lower carbonation, it makes this a slow sipper, just as the brew should be.
Overall- A hoppy style barleywine a little on the drier side. While not my favorite barley it is a good drinking and enjoyable brew.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours hazy, light mahogany, big thick creamy off white head, lots of thick lacing. Aroma caramel, toffee, pineapple, eaethy, bready. Taste bitter upfront, almost an artificial sweetener flavor, caramel, toffee, very earthy slight pineapple. Mouthfeel full body, medium carbonation, slight alcohol bite, semi-dry finish. Overall interesting, good big beer now, very complex, I think the slight artificial sweetener flavor and bitterness would subside with age, I need to age one of these.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours unclear, Dark amber with an off White head. Aroma is packed with sweet malts and sugar, hops and hoppy fruityness. Taste is very bitter-hoppy, but still with a good deal of sweet caramel malts. But over all, this is more IIPA than barley Wine in my opinion. Fairly high carb, medium body

Very strong and malty barley wine. It tastes like a dark breadcrust combined with a malty sweetness and oak.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2014 Vintage 355mL bottle
Pours a clear deep amber body with a small firm ring of dense foam.
Aroma explodes from the (Sierra Nevada IPA) glass! Grass, ripe peach, pine needle, grapefruit, bay leaf, resiny, sappy, really fresh hops, but not to be outdone, there’s an excellent measure of sticky toffee, toasted nut & biscuity malt in support
Big in the mouth without being cloying or overly boozy, has a resiny, sticky texture, long on the finish, decent carbonation.
A delight on the palate; leafy, grassy, sappy, pine & citrus, spicy, woody, with plenty of sweet caramels & biscuity malts there. Big bitterness provides balance and length, warming alcohol without being all too obvious.
Top notch barley wine, great balance, plenty of flavour.

Uninspiring one with some not so easy to drink moments. Bit metallic with some acid in the back. Below average.
